'That's not how it works': Trump's grasp of Nato questioned

President’s claim that Germany owes the US ‘vast sums of money’ shows a lack of understanding, says ex-Nato representative

On the heels of a visibly awkward visit from the German chancellor, Angela Merkel, Donald Trump said on Saturday that Germany owed “vast sums of money” to Nato and the US, even though the alliance does not stipulate payments to America.

His remarks prompted a former US permanent representative to Nato to reply “that’s not how Nato works”, and to add that increased European spending on defense was not a “favor (or payment) to the US”.

2. the purpose of the alliance was "to keep the Russians out, the Americans in, and the Germans down,"

But by now, that purpose seems quite obsolete. The Germans are no threat to anyone and should be paying their fair share for defense. And to the extent that they won't, that reflects their assessment of whether keeping the Russians out justifies more expenditure on defense.

5. Germany cut it's forces knowing the US would make up the difference

Most of old NATO has realized they can whittle their own forces down and Americans will still die to protect them. Germany is a Prime example. The Bundeswehr is the same strength as the USMC now

Germany's Mil Budget and spending is lower that France, & the UK

the Germans themselves in 2014 admitted they could not meet NATO Defensive committments

the joke (all too real in Afghanistan) about NATO's ISAF was it stood for "I Saw Americans Fighting"
