Former Republican lawmaker stuns CNN panel when he says Trump isn't smart enough to be president

BRAD REED

David Jolly, a former Republican congressman from Florida, stunned a CNN panel on Monday morning when he said President Donald Trump isn’t “intellectually qualified” to be president.

When asked by CNN’s Poppy Harlow whether Trump should publicly apologize if it’s revealed that he was wrong in accusing former President Barack Obama of wiretapping Trump Tower during the 2016 election, Jolly said that he should — but he also said that an apology wouldn’t mask Trump’s other major shortcomings as president.

“There’s a bigger issue, whether this president is intellectually qualified to be President of the United States,” Jolly said.

Harlow seemed taken aback by Jolly’s statement. “You’re saying he’s not smart enough?” she asked him. “That’s quite a charge.”

Jolly went on to explain that Trump has very little knowledge about policy, and that he’s relying on cable news shows to inform him about the details of legislation he’s already endorsed.

1. Many of us have been saying the same thing, since 2015.

The man is several loaves shy of a bakery.

14. At least more than he has, that's for sure.

Does his lying not bother you? Does his ignorance not make you nervous?

Just asking.

8. Well he is not mine.

Did you expect the Jews that were loaded on cattle cars and walked into the ovens to say Heil Hitler as they died? I am not a sheeple and will not recognize a person that wants to commit mass murder and that is exactly what he and his administration wants to do. They want to cull the herd so the 1% can become richer.

19. Who needs a link if actually watch news other than faux.

Healthcare alone will kill millions.

When I was in management and an employee would ask questions, I answered a few then told them to look the information up themselves then come back to me and we will talk. The only way anyone will learn is to seek that information for themselves.

15. And that is what scares me the most

It is not the Russian thingy
It is not the Obama Wire Tap thingy
It not even his golfing on the weekend thingy

It is that perceived, on my part, the fact that he believes he can run the country like he runs his business. He has to learn that there are checks and balances in place that he can't over rule, and insulting people via twitter, especially the judiciary, does not endear him to people who someday may have to decide his fate.

He is just adding more alligators to the swamp he is suppose to be draining.

4. Too dumb or too crazy?

Trump's dysfunction may not be related to IQ, although his writing and speaking are surprisingly bad. His problem seems to be more in the areas of executive functioning than ideation. Dubbya was dumb and uninformed, but he was able to listen to his advisors and speak as he was told to do. Trump has difficulty working with staff and seems unaware of the context in which he is playing his role.

11. There's a lot of vile creatures in the swamp that Trump was promised to clean up. ...

They include both Republicans and Democrats as well as lobbyists and government bureaucrats. They simply love living in the dark, dank, scummy and corrupt D.C. swamp and they all want to see Trump fail.

24. What we need

Term limits further reduces the options and hence the power of the citizen voter. We need to move in the other direction, towards reform that increases the options and power of citizens. This means reducing the options and power of the two major parties, who have a legal lock on who gets to be a serious candidate and it means reducing the power of the special interests who have a powerful, often dominant voice in who wins the election through the bribes we euphemize as "campaign contributions" .

The answer to both challenges is to take our democracy out of the hands of private organizations like political parties and billionaire campaign donors and conduct our elections in an open, transparent manner in which the decisive difference between candidates is the number of voters which support each. This can only be done by a government process.

Anything that is done by private donors or corporations such as political parties has no place in our democracy.

So why would Trump know all the details since he isn't writing it?
