Best science fiction film of the year (2005): "Serenity"
Films of note for this year include a so-so (at best) "Fantastic Four" adaptation, an adaptation of "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" that is very much inferior to the BBC miniseries, a mediocre modernized "War of the Worlds", and "Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith", which is the best of the prequels (not saying much).
The winner this year is "Serenity", which wraps up Joss Whedon's prematurely-cancelled tv series. Would I have given the award had I not enjoyed watching the series itself? Probably not. But since I did.....

2. Really glad they wrapped up the "loose ends" from Firefly
The detail Whedon put into the series and the movie were really incredible.
From the weapons, like Mal's esoteric "six shooter", to the Chinese/English language mash up, it really worked.
