Stylewe - I kind of like this company...

I haven't bought anything from them yet, but I've been eyeing a few of their dresses. This one is so flowy and pretty. I don't know where I would wear it but I think I could find somewhere!

This is the one I really like. Great summer dress! I like the pop of color from the printed underlay. Those shoes are awful - I'd probably wear flat sandals or ballet slippers. Flats are coming back in - FINALLY! So sick of shoe shopping and finding nothing but hooker heels on an otherwise cute shoe.

Because it's an Asian site, you have to be sure to check the measurements. On other sites, XL is often an XS on a big American body.

1. More mild jealously on my part

I have posted before about my serious lack of sense of style. Also there is lack of Town and Country style magazines for black women. It is all urban and I am trying hard to be landed gentry. At 6 feet tall I doubt any of their pretty things would fit me anyway.

2. Landed gentry? LOL

Not sure I've got that look down.

You just have to find your style. Your height is an advantage. I'm 5'9" and wish I was taller.

If I were you I would go to nearby department stores and shops and just try things on to get an idea of what you like and what looks good. Then you can find the same style or brand online and comparison shop to get it cheaper.

I love digging in and finding bargains! If I won the lottery I would still do it, it's so much fun and hours can go by without me noticing!

3. I have been using personal shoppers at higher end stores.

Most fashion for black women has an urban sometimes edgy feel to it. I live on a desert ranch. The ankle booties, leggings, and peplum tops just don't work out here. Then again, a middle aged black woman in Texas cowgirl outfits does not quite work either. I wear scrubs at work, a lab coat when I teach, and old BDUs when getting dirty. The social outfits, especially upscale ones, have escaped me. I have accumulated some LBDs, and business suits, but the dressy or elegant casual or social looks are something I just can't pull off. Why is the patrician/land gentry look so challenging? The joy of having been in little more than uniforms since undergrad. I also remember my mother for whom it was effortless to look just right. A skill I have never learned. *sigh*

8. Here's an article in Town and Country I just found.

It gives a general set of guidelines that could be helpful. They're not hard and fast rules but might be able to guide you in making decisions.

#4 is bullshit, IMO, and #15 is just silly.

11. I have some of her things

Personal shopper services are a god send. I have been using a private (vice store) one for a while now. You build a relationship and they look out for you. A bit pricey, but given my schedule and lifestyle, worth it. She has also been teaching me along the way. I am getting better. She is still aghast that I got married in my uniform.

Went back later and did better, but I'm still drawn towards it. I sell a bit on Ebay and other sites just to keep my toes in the water, so I try to keep up with what is out there even if I don't wear a lot of it.

Right now I'm going for a "hip grandmother/boho" kind of look but I need to lose a few pounds to carry it off in the way I really want to. I like this for example:

I don't feel old enough to be a grandmother! He was a surprise and I just love him with my whole heart. We've had a wild year with the baby coming and my husband recovering from "The Widowmaker." I let myself go a bit in the midst of all of it, so now I'm trying to relax and allow myself some self-pampering including some new clothes. So I know how hard it is out there to find what you want!

I think it's rather nice that you got married in your uniform.

ETA: My son with the child is 24, so it could have been a lot worse. He's just not through college yet and we're doing our best to help him get finished, which will be in May. When he found out he was going to be a dad, he was upset that he might not get to finish school, but we assured him that was at the top of the priority list for all involved.

12. Have a look at Garden & Gun

http://gardenandgun.com/

It's a slick lifestyle publication for the southern gentry of today.

They have it in black too:

6. OK, now this is pretty!

I wouldn't wear it as a dress though, I'd wear it over leggings or skinny jeans.

9. Another dress, great for the office, church, courtroom - anywhere you want to look

stylish but ladylike. I would wear this with gold earrings and a string of pearls, dark stockings, and high black heels. And red nail polish...
