I am the Hugh Callaway that is the subject of the foregoing story. First let me say I have never really recovered completely from losing Thanh. Before the tragedy I had been an activist and I was very up on the law and how all such thing go. Working with Glen Maxey a State House Representative(the first openly gay one) and people like Diana Hardy Garcia we managed to get a "real" hate-crime law that protects everyone from bias motivated acts of violence. This law has real teeth to it. For 17 years every time someone doing time in the state prison system for a hate crime came up for parole I had to be notifies 30 days before they were considered for parole.
I helped organize a protest rally with many others at the Tyler, Texas park where Donald Alrich(spelling Who Cares) abducted Nicolas West. Over 5000 gays and friends showed up! Donald Alrich thought he had become an important celebrity that had a supportive following. He would pontificate with eager Reporters who gave venue to his ignorance on gays and other issues. When I heard his hatemongering I knew that he expected that he would spend 20+ yrs on death row basking in the attention his weak mind loved. He was disappointed! I talked to a lot of people who talked to their friends(we're everywhere). When his appeals reached the various courts they started out at the top of every docket instead of the bottom. Never will forget when Donald started complaining that his appeals were going the courts fast as lightening. His bigoted big mouth helped speed things up. He knew the people of Texas wanted to shut his nasty mouth for good. Donald at least you got to know a little of what the young man you murdered felt. From conviction to execution was less than 7 years a record. He got swift justice and so did five others who lead young boys in hate crime murders. The ironic thing is many of the men who do these horrible things are latent self-loathing homosexuals. So what were they doing in the first place hatemongering on gay men they wish they had the guts to be like--jealousy jealousy!!!!
On the gun issue one of my greatest regrets is not having my .380 pistol in my hip pocket. I always carried it at night especially after the crack epidemic. This night we were clubing so I left it at home. A number of times I stopped criminals form acting against myself or others. In this case with the one who controled their pistol he would wave it in the air and even turn his back wave the pistol and watch people he was driving from the scene. I less than 2 1/2 seconds I could have killed all three of them. Thanh was a small guy inexperienced in what to do in that situation. It would have been nothing for me to get away, but I just could not do that. If It meant dying there so be it. I felt totally responsible to him and for him. I wished many times I had died instead of him.
