24. From his own mouth.

http://www.fieldandstream.com/articles/guns/2013/02/gun-control-joe-biden-interview

V.P. BIDEN: Well, the way in which we measure it is—I think most scholars would say—is that as long as you have a weapon sufficient to be able to provide your self-defense. I did one of these town-hall meetings on the Internet and one guy said, “Well, what happens when the end days come? What happens when there’s the earthquake? I live in California, and I have to protect myself.”

I said, “Well, you know, my shotgun will do better for you than your AR-15, because you want to keep someone away from your house, just fire the shotgun through the door.” Most people can handle a shotgun a hell of a lot better than they can a semiautomatic weapon in terms of both their aim and in terms of their ability to deter people coming. We can argue whether that’s true or not, but it is no argument that, for example, a shotgun could do the same job of protecting you. Now, granted, you can come back and say, “Well, a machine gun could do a better job of protecting me.” No one’s arguing we should make machine guns legal.

25. Biden is talking about the "end days." If those days come, I suspect most of the gun fanciers here

will be shooting people well before they get up to their compound under the guise of protecting themselves from marauders.

Too many of you guys are into sniper rifles, red dot sights, special loads, preparing for the "coming race riots," and similar crud.

Who can forget all the gun nutters saying if Zimmerman is acquitted, there will be race riots. Didn't happen, but the scared little fellows on the right wing sites -- and even in the DU Gungeon -- sure were getting prepared with their gunz.

That could very well be considered trying to knock in down to gain entry. This is going to be a close call.

I would have called 911, backed off and let him make the choice. If he beat in the door I would have pulled the trigger. If not then the cops can take care of it.

Since in this case, our homeowner didn't open the door to whoever was pounding on it. Indeed, reading the article it seems that the door was very adamantly remaining closed.

This is more goalpost moving, trying to conflate two dissimilar events to justify the outcome of one of them.

Nope, somebody knocking on the door in the early hours of the morning could never be up to no good, it's just not possible, right?

in both of the links I provided didn't open their doors, in response to knocks, they called through the door that they were calling the police and in both cases the thugs that were knocking fired through the closed door.

You claimed that someone knocking on a door was in no way life threatening, these instances would contradict your claim, as in both cases the the perps fired through the closed door after knocking on it trying to gain entry.

22. Kinda been there

A similar thing happened to me when I was working away from home many years ago. I was working an industrial site 4 days a week, then 4 off. The per diem was good enough so I could stay in motels, and I figured the cheaper I found the more money I'd have. I spent 1 night in a pretty bad place in a bad part of town. About 2:30 AM I woke up to a real pounding on my door. And the lock wasn't all that much. And a voice that yelled "I KNOW YOU'RE IN THERE YOU SON OF A BITCH!!!" Before he'd finished saying that I was on the floor on the far side of the bed with my pistol trained on the door. Then, "Oh shit, wrong room". And the pounding started up next door. He never got a response so he eventually went away. Early next morning I was loading my bag in the car headed off to work and one of the neighbors asked if it was my door the guy had pounded on first. Turns out the guy was looking for his wife who was supposed to be at the motel with some other guy. I told the neighbor to tell him he'd been real lucky he didn't come through the door. And how close he'd come to losing it all. As long as the door was closed I didn't feel threatened, but I was definitely ready to protect myself if necessary.

Like I said this was a cheap motel. No phone in the room and cell phones were a long way in the future. I don't think the desk folks could have spelled security. I spent 20 years working with police in Search and Rescue, and got my ass chewed good one night because I wasn't armed and they thought I should have been but that's another story for another time. Any honest cop will tell you that when seconds count they are only minutes away. They do the best they can but folks have to take a bit of responsibility for their own protection too. Had I known in advance just how bad this place was I wouldn't have been there.

I mean a guy pounding on your door could kill you! I personally think the majority of people that take a gun everywhere they go do so because they live in constant irrational fear. I think they should just buck up and stop being afraid of their own shadows. But that's just me.

There are many places in this country where you need to take care of yourself. The LEO's are a half hour or more away.
This is another cultural call. There are those of us who take responsibility for our own welfare and those who leave it to others.
When violence comes at you it suddenly comes out of nowhere and is over in seconds. The only way a cop could help you is he were standing in front of you with his gun drawn. If not, he is too far away.

39. The owner jumped into the fight too soon.

With the door between him and the unarmed drunks, the owner has no legal basis for using deadly force. In this case, legally the door needs to be breached first. Check your local laws as they vary from place to place.

The laws place the Good Guys at a disadvantage most of the time. If you don't agree with the limits placed by the laws, you need to work to change the laws. Until then you are stuck playing by them.
