Pillar of the Community Sentenced for Building Dungeons Where He and Others Tortured Your Children

Beginning June 2, Lucerne County businessman and philanthropist, Robert K. Mericle, will walk into a federal prison to serve a one year sentence and pay a $2mil fine for lying to federal prosecutors about his involvement in the 'Kids for Cash' scandal that has devestated the lives of thousands of familes in Pennsylvania.

http://timesleader.com/...

Federal prosecutors accused Mericle, 51, of helping then-Luzerne County judges Mark Ciavarella and Michael Conahan conceal the source of more than $2 million in “finder’s fees” paid to them by Mericle and attorney Robert Powell in connection with the construction of two juvenile detention centers built by Mericle’s company.

Those detention facilities, privately owned, for-profit juvenile dungeons built and operated by Mericle, are at the center of a scandal which should serve as an abject lesson in why we should NOT privatize prisons. The 'Cash for Kids' scandal involved every level of the criminal justice system in Pennsylvania; Children being questioned by police and prosecutors without their parents or lawyers being present, judges ignoring these violations and sentencing children to time in these facilities and receiving kickbacks from the very people who built and operate the facilities, and impotent public defenders unable to challenge the system in any meaningful way.

3. In a civilized society, some things do not lend themselves to privatized, for-profit operation.

Prisons are one of those things.
