4. Right to work for peanuts state--I get it.

Are you saying that this deviant behavior is related to it being anti-union? I disagree. I just think it must have a real low-life population. People can get food stamps. We don't have the same kind of hunger that you would expect in an African nation. Poverty is relative and it doesn't mean that the inhabitants will be inclined to this sort of aberrant behavior. There is even a link between income and being dishonest and contrary to what you seem to be suggesting, it goes up with higher incomes!

20. Actually, I expected that sort of callous and unsympathetic tone about the plight of desperate folks

And we get this "The poor will always be with us" spiel. When it was written in Matthew, they didn't have a social safety net back then. But it's so full of holes these days from planned negligence, I'm surprised that these things aren't more common.

Not to mention the fact that your reaction is also quite predictable as well, I might add.

21. I never said the poor would always be with us.

You're putting words in my mouth. I wonder why you're here? To parse people's sentences and accuse them of things they didn't do? What is wrong with staying at DU? You must have loads of sympathizers there!

I said that we have always had poor people who acted with dignity, no matter how little they had. The fact that someone is poor is no excuse to steal groceries out of a dead woman's car with her young children strapped into their seats. It's mind-boggling that I would have to reiterate this and that you would even try to defend it on any level. If it had been Katrina or some other comparable situation, I would not bat an eyelash. But actually Katrina is a great point because the looting took place with some people hauling out items like flat screen tvs and NOT foodstuffs. And that shows that some people have the lack consciousness that has nothing to do with physically starving and everything to do with a state of mind.

24. If you thoroughly read my statement

I have no problem with people "looting" during a crisis like Katrina or an outage when it comes to food or other items needed to maintain life. And I don't doubt that the media may have a double standard. However, your statement about needing education is quite interesting. What is the dropout rate of Black males in the USA? Is someone preventing them from getting an education or are they dropping out anyway? The truth is that there is a racial divide in public education that is quite visible starting in third grade. And this means that by high school it is likely that a good percentage of the Black male freshmen may not make it to their senior year and no one is forcing them out. They are choosing to leave and I say it's due to being so far behind that they are disenchanted with learning. Experiencing so much failure will do that to a child. However, it's a complicated problem that cannot be solved by simply throwing money at it.

Last edited Sat Jun 7, 2014, 08:00 PM - Edit history (1)

I never said that I approved of it, I merely stated that I understand how desperation and poverty can drive people to do things that they shouldn't do.

The whole point of the Katrina articles was to point out that perspectives and context matters ONLY to people who bother take the time to see them.

A thief will steal anything they can get their hands on.

And for shits and giggles, lets assume they were "desperate".

6. I see your stealing groceries, and I raise you videoing the victims burning to death.

http://www.myfoxdfw.com/story/25685403/officer-recalls-fatal-hwy-67-crash-is-appalled-at-witnesses-lack-of-help

A deadly crash on Monday left a witness with questions about the behavior of other witnesses.

The crash happened...leaving two people...trapped inside a burning car.

An off-duty Dallas police officer was first on the scene and says he's upset because of what he saw in the car and because he was one of the only witnesses who tried to save the victims.

“To see the person writh(ing), and you're trying to do your best to talk to ‘em and using fire extinguishers to try and extinguish a flame..."

“In my peripheral vision, in addition within a very close distance, you see people filming with their cell phones,”

Williams says he even asked a woman to back up away from the car as she recorded at a close distance with her phone.

“You should try to help, even if it’s just a bottle of water you have sitting in your car to throw on a person,” said Williams. “You don’t know what comfort that would have brought, but like I said, at that point…I just prayed that God would go ahead and take them.”

Williams calls it the "perversion of social media" that would prompt people to try and get video before trying to save a burning victim.

No doubt about it. Humans can be scum sometimes.

67. Thank you! Someone actually sticking up for people currently low-income.

I try to avoid using the words POOR and DESTITUTE because a person's lot in life can change.

If current actions are always the result of past ones, we would never grow. Any of us. The DU (and by extension, Discussionist) mentality is that if you are born in poverty, it is natural that you will use drugs, lack education, and be criminals. And if you are born into wealth, you have an easy ride and you will naturally be happy, etc.

Being born into wealth (or at least an upper-middle class environment) is not necessarily easy at all! Some kids are raised with nannies, hardly see their parents, appearances are everything so they grow up with a lot of phoniness.

Neglect in the form of being raised by hired help is CHILD ABUSE. Those children grow up to self-medicate just as often as kids from the 'hood. There have been to be no higher rates of substance abuse in low-income neighborhoods!

Your post sure doesn't reveal it in any way.

Kids: Daddy, Why did those people steal our dinner when Mommy got hurt?
Daddy: It was all due to poverty, race and class and Mommy isn't just hurt she's dead.
Kids: Daddy, I'm hungry
Daddy: Sorry but some poor, <insert race here>, <insert class here> person needed it more than you. By the way your mother is dead so we didn't need all that food anyway. I'm sorry you had to see that.
Kids: That's OK Daddy as long as my food went to a good cause, it doesn't matter that Mommy is dead.

Some people just plain suck, and they will always be among us. That's a bad thing.

The good thing is that most of us don't suck in that particular way. In this case, most of us posting here (hopefully all of us) wouldn't have stolen the groceries from the car, regardless of our circumstances. We're all pissed off about it. That doesn't make us brothers or sisters, and it doesn't mean we're united or anything like that. It doesn't even put us on the same page, but I think it at least means we're reading the same book.

I think we can all agree that anyone that would come upon this accident, and see a dead woman in the front seat, and children in the back, and steal from the car, is a total piece of trash, regardless of their circumstances.

57. What sort of POS do you have to be to do that?

That is about as low as you can get. Anyone that can try to justify it in a non-disaster situation has truly put their agenda in front of their humanity.

62. Hey, evangeline.....

I've noticed that the usual assortment of cowardly liars that viciously attacked me for posting crime stories have attacked you here as well. What's funny about this story is that there doesn't even appear to be a positive ID of the race/ethnicity of the loathsome bunch that stole the groceries, but that hasn't stopped this disingenuous group from making the absurd and improvable assertion that you posses some hidden, hateful agenda nonetheless.

They're attempting to shame you into posting only the sorts of news stories that they find acceptable, that fits their narrative of the world. Of course, that's not a reflection of reality, is it? Go to any news site and there are crime stories involving all races. There's no way around it.

The crowd that wants to censor this section is trying to bully you. Don't let them. They'll accuse you of possessing an agenda, but in reality, the only obvious agenda being touted here is theirs. Challenge them to prove their cowardly, roundabout accusations of racism. They won't be able to do it and will slither away like the slimy reptiles they are.

Good Luck
