Muslim woman denied soda can 'weapon' on flight![]() A simple request for an unopened can of Diet Coke on a United Airlines flight left Tahera Ahmad in tears. A Muslim chaplain and director of interfaith engagement at Northwestern University, Ahmad, 31, was traveling Friday from Chicago to Washington for a conference promoting dialogue between Israeli and Palestinian youth. She was wearing a headscarf, or hijab. For hygienic reasons, she asked for an unopened can of soda, she said. The flight attendant told her that she could not give her one but then handed an unopened can of beer to a man seated nearby. Ahmad questioned the flight attendant. "We are unauthorized to give unopened cans to people because they may use it as a weapon on the plane," she recalled the flight attendant telling her. When Ahmad told the flight attendant she was being discriminated against, the attendant abruptly opened the beer can. "It's so you don't use it as a weapon," Ahmad said she was told. 1. Makes sense.
An un opened soft drink can can be quite the weapon. Do a little research about people being hit by them when they are thrown from cars. Lethal....... As to the guy with the beer, I don't believe it....

Besides Islam has a lying clause built in, but you knew that right? Islam is a global plague upon mankind. End of story.

37. No, here is how I roll.
The script is written before the actor is chosen. But if you mean that in the sense of, do I believe people that identify themselves primarily by their religion are mentally defective, then yeah, that's how I roll. Because they are. Especially if you look at the genesis of Islam. Not too mention the oppression of woman. It's a disease that needs stamped out sooner rather than later. Christianity if left unchecked would have closely resembled the idiocy these people demonstrate on a daily basis. Sorry if the truth bothers you.

of course she would lie. I don't blame the flight attendant one bit. Remember that the 9/11 terrorists used nothing more than simple box cutters.

or a t shirt, bra.. Also can rip the can and use the sharp edges to cut someone. Anything can be a weapon if you really want it to be.
I think they do it so people don't stuff them in their carry on since usually soda is complimentary and you could take a few hone with you. Saying because it can be used as a weapon was a dumb thing to say. |

42. Neither of us were there so there is no context.
I am an offense through defense type so I was taking the devils advocate position on this one. Do we need a list to remind us of all of the "stupid" rules we have had to endure over the last 16 years or so? I'll open with finger nail clippers. As I said in an earlier reply. The script comes before the actor. Too scripted, way too observant.

26. Why don't you believe it?
It is standard practice on airlines to hand out a can when someone orders a beer.
Typically for a soda, they will pour it. Giving you roughly half the content of a standard can. But when you order a beer, since you paid for it and they are obligated to give you the full amount, they typically hand you the can (usually along with one of the small plastic cups to pour it into if you wish). Last flight I was on (southwest, not United) I had a fat tire and they gave me the can. |

38. Well my first thought was,
Let me start with my second thought. The reply below was intended for someone else. Seems to me we are in agreement? If you read below you will see I haven't flown for close to decade now. So I am fairly out of touch when it comes to beverage service and portions size on a plane. Funny, I used to love the damn nuts... They always tasted better on the plane. Little bottle of jack and a bud, and a bag of nuts, It don't get no more redneck than that...
Who even notices such shit? Seriously, I order a drink and then get bent over how it is served? Even noticing how others are served? I practically live in bars, I see different people being served in different ways every day. I don't see them taking to Twitter and screaming discrimination. To the attendants you are just another body they have to transport from point a to point b, nothing more. Think about the why for a moment please. Why would an attendant even do that in the first place? Why? Would you like to know how I handled it? On my last flight, coming from Mexico I was treated like I was some kind of criminal by my own government. They looked at me like I was suspicious, and in general made me feel very un-citizen like. Told my wife, duck those clock suckers, I will never fly again, and guess what, I haven't. Has it been an inconvenience, yes. One more anecdotal, I'm friends with a Vice President of a very well known company, guess what.. Same thing. Poor sucker now lives in his car. 8 years and counting. So yeah, a lot of us "white people" get treated badly too. Suck it up butter cup. Life isn't fair. Better learn to integrate on your own, and not by government proxy. |

But I don't buy that. She should have taken the opened can but the flight attendant shouldn't have said it was because it could be used as a weapon.. That's ridiculous.

43. Perhaps the attendant actually spoke the truth then?
You realize these types of positions sometimes require keeping even the employees in the dark about why things are the way they are? Perhaps she or he? Actually knows someone who gave him or her the deeper truth (by accident)? So it can't be used as a weapon, wink wink.... Because you look so dangerous sweetie.... Roll the eyes...
Why does it always have to be some racist discrimination? Or did I read it wrong? I admit I just glossed it over and made a contrite reply that was never intended to be parsed. My first reaction when I read crap like that is, I see it more like mind conditioning coming from the fringe of the left. If you are an independent thinking sort, I would hope you would conclude, as I do, their record isn't very good when comes to being truthful in matters of discrimination. We should all be against that of press, because it lessens our sensitivity to real cases that do exist. I'm outta time. I'll try to check back later. Have a good one. |

8. The guy paid for the beer. The soda is free. The airline doesn't want to hand out full cans.
Anything else is BS.
And I think that the rule is that all containers must be opened. The airline doesn't want you to deplane with the free goodies. |

13. If the policy is enforced across-the-board, I don't see an issue.
If that didn't happen in this case, the problem isn't with denying Ms. Ahmad the closed container, but in not opening the other person's container.
Amusingly, at Providence Park (the stadium in which my local soccer teams, Portland Timbers FC and Portland Thorns FC, play), they remove the plastic caps from bottles of water and soft drinks. Beer and cider are on tap, so no cans or bottles for those. This isn't done for safety reasons, obviously, but so that jackasses don't chuck them onto the field. Of course, I bring a cap for the Vitamin Water bottles I usually get (when I'm not having cider) in my pocket... =P |

I've never seen a flight attendant NOT open a can for someone (beer or soda), I'm not clear which hygienic restriction prevents someone from opening a new can of soda right in front of you, as someone who seems to deal with issues between Israel and Palestinian youth for a LIVING, I have a hard time believing THIS is what reduced her to tears, and she seemed to have the absolutely perfect bigot sitting across from her to say absolutely the worst thing in an unconfirmed interaction.
Could it have happened? Sure. But I don't believe it did happen as is being recounted in this story. |

The fact that United is a piece-of-shit airline makes it easy. Rank prejudice against all Muslims as a group just doesn't appeal to me.
