Obama to rename tallest U.S. peak in historic Alaska visit

WASHINGTON — President Obama announced on Sunday that Mount McKinley was being renamed Denali, using his executive power to restore an Alaska Native name with deep cultural significance to the tallest mountain in North America.

The move came on the eve of Mr. Obama’s trip to Alaska, where he will spend three days promoting aggressive action to combat climate change, and is part of a series of steps he will make there meant to address the concerns of Alaska Native tribes.

It is the latest bid by the president to fulfill his 2008 campaign promise to improve relations between the federal government and the nation’s American Indian tribes, an important political constituency that has a long history of grievances against the government.

Denali’s name has long been seen as one such slight, regarded as an example of cultural imperialism in which a Native American name with historical roots was replaced by an American one having little to do with the place.

The central Alaska mountain has officially been called Mount McKinley for almost a century. In announcing that Sally Jewell, the secretary of the interior, had used her power to rename it, Mr. Obama was paying tribute to the state’s Native population, which has referred to the site for generations as Denali, meaning “the high one” or “the great one.”

9. Meh like renaming the triboro bridge after RFK most still call it the Triboro Bridge

Most Americans will still call it Mt. Mckinley no matter who renamed it

Custers last stand was at the Little Big Horn (indian name the greasy grass) except for indians everyone calls it the little big horn

the NYC 59th Street /Queensboro bridge was renamed for Ed Koch, no one calls it the Ed Koch Bridge. Koch before he died said he didn't want that

Renaming doesn't work all that well

2. I'm not opposed to this, I even support it, but

1) It has already been called Denali in much of the literature concerning the mountain for some time, and

2) while there is, from my perspective, little legitimate complaint about the action, it remains one that is more of form than of substance.

7. Alaska renamed it a while ago, but until this happens the federal government considers it...

Mt. McKinley.

29. Alaska renamed the park a long time ago. The 'official'

name of the mountain was not changed back to Denali. And native Alaskans have always referred to the mountain as Denali. This is just changing back the name as should have been done way back then.

3. I have no problem with this.

In fact, as someone of Italian descent, I dig the Italian-sounding new name. It'll add a little class to the "jernt"".

You're right, it does sound Italian.

14. Usually I don't like name changes but this change is fine.

I was bummed when Bombay was changed to Mumbai. Only because I was used to Bombay and likes the sound of the name. I've always been fascinated with Indian art and culture.

21. Maybe because he's not a Marxist? Or even close....

Interesting that people on the right consider Obama to be a socialist/marxist..... but ACTUAL socialists disagree with his economic policies even more than the right does.

If he's a socialist, he's piss poor at it.... since the market economy of this country is doing fantastic during his time in office.
