AR-15 for home defense?!? You don't say! (North Carolina)

It was an intruder kicking in the door.

Jonathan responded to the startling noise by reaching for the AR-15 he keeps under his bed for home defense. Crouching low as he moved through the house with his rifle, Jonathan encountered a male armed with a 9mm handgun and shots were exchanged.
http://easybakegunclub.com/news/4912/AR-15-for-home-defense%3F!%3F-You-dont-say!-%28North-Car.html#.U3LDAijjHHt

I know our service personal use ARs for CQB but I'm still wary of a 556 being used in a house thaqt my family is in - not to mention my neighbors next door. Now if that AR was a 300blk loaded with 220 gr sub-sonic rounds. . .

1. AR15 is less likely to penetrate walls than a shotgun

I personally like a handgun with attached light. If you have to work a door nob or phone a rifle would be a bit cumbersome especially going around tight corners. I would imagine hollow point handgun ammunition would be less likely to penetrate walls than FMJ.

4. I keep a glock 21c

.45 cal loaded with 200gr hollow points for the reasons you state. I'm very accurate at the short ranges that would be required for home defense if it was ever necessary.

7. I was real big on the attached light until someone pointed something out.

Sometimes, you might be pointing your light at something that it could be very dangerous to point a gun at.

44. Only if you are talking about slugs

A FMJ from an AR will go though multiple walls just fine. Birdshot not so much.

I'd prefer a Glock for home duty.

And an AR15 or an AK for ranch/farm duty.

some people feel they need an arsenal of weapons for home & ranch defense now.

That's what's really disturbing. Sad state of affairs in this country.

37. Not at all

What is sad is that some people would deprive others of their constitutional rights as if they were given the right to make that choice.

They were not, they can not, and it really makes them angry.

To them I would just say that I will gladly remove their 1st amendment rights if they screw with our nations second amendment rights. Hey if they get to make that choice then so do I.

39. You make no sense

but whatever...

Nobody's talking about constitutional rights here. Just saying how sad it is that people in this country willingly invest in a symbol of "security." It says a lot about how we are failing as a nation.

45. Depends where you live and why

There are non-human predators that have to be dealt with sometimes on a ranch.

There are human predators that have to be dealt with sometimes just about everywhere..

Dogs and guns are applicable to both scenarios

48. Don't agree

We're not talking about ranches and farms where the usual hunting guns and rifles are found.

We're talking about the insane and irrational fear of "human predators" that is overtaking us. And guns are not the most effective means of dealing with them. Guns are mostly just a security symbol. Only about a quarter to a third of the population can even use a gun effectively in a stressful situation. Better to go with more effective strategies and means.

But you've got your guns, so you're fine. Just realize that most people don't have the skills or mental control to use them effectively. Guns don't need any promoting.

50. Depends on where you measure effectiveness.

When in the moment (home invasion etc) firearms are about the most effective means of dealing with those intent on causing you harm. I am 30 minutes from the nearest sheriff's station. What do you think is more effective in that situation?

I agree that more training is required for those who have firearms, There is lots of decent training out there and the competition is lowering prices. I recommend it for everyone. 2 day class, with 200 rounds or so down range is a good start. I have already demonstrated in that "quarter to a third" who can use them effectively.

29. Unless one can't handle the recoil, 12 Ga. and buckshot would be a far better choice.

If one was particularly recoil-sensitive, 20 Ga. with a proper loading (buckshot) isn't bad for defensive use.

26. The 5.56 round is not high velocity, at best, it's a medium velocity round.

But, I do agree with you, a 20 ga. loaded with duck shells is a better home defense than an AR-15.

33. Based on the criteria that duck shot won't go through walls like a 5.56 round would.

Myself, I prefer a 12 gauge loaded with .00 shells, good CQC weapon without the fear of over penetration and good spread pattern.

40. You have that backwards.

Of all the normally available ammo for self defense (rifle, shotgun, and handgun), 5.56mm penetrates the fewest walls according to multiple tests by law enforcement and others.

Winchester makes a frangible ammo in 5.56mm 55 grain FMJ(RA223SF). It's designed to not ricochet and made of sintered copper powder so wont penetrate steel. When it hits such backstops it becomes powdered metal again
