Trump used $258,000 from his charity to settle legal problems

Donald Trump spent more than a quarter-million dollars from his charitable foundation to settle lawsuits that involved the billionaire's for-profit businesses, according to interviews and a review of legal documents.

Those cases, which together used $258,000 from Trump's charity, were among four newly documented expenditures in which Trump may have violated laws against "self-dealing" - which prohibit nonprofit leaders from using charity money to benefit themselves or their businesses.

In one case, from 2007, Trump's Mar-a-Lago Club faced $120,000 in unpaid fines from the town of Palm Beach, Florida, resulting from a dispute over the height of a flagpole.

In a settlement, Palm Beach agreed to waive those fines - if Trump's club made a $100,000 donation to a specific charity for veterans. Instead, Trump sent a check from the Donald J. Trump Foundation, a charity funded almost entirely by other people's money, according to tax records.

3. Nothing will come of this, as it was not illegal :) It is not even unethical

Get back to me when Trump takes $145 million from Russians and then grants a Russian company 20% of our Uranium, then we will have a truly criminal use of a foundation for pay to play.

5. Of course it's unethical; he stole money other people gave to charity to pay his debts

Those were business debts, and the charity does not exist to increase the profits of his companies. It is plainly illegal.

$145 million? I think Trump has taken far more than that from Russians. His family has spent years bragging how much Russians are paying them.

6. No, you should read the cases where the money was used and you will see it was to make

a payment to charity Charities can make payments to other charities nothing illegal or unethical about that.

Your regressive opinionated blogs are doing a disservice in the knowledge category

7. No, that was money owed by a corporation, and a court ordered it to pay

That does not mean that a charity can pay the money instead. The Charity is not there to settle the debts of a corporation, or an individual (in the case of paying for the paintings, which then ended up being used by Trump and his corporation). This was illegal. If the charity was to make an additional donation to another charity, that would be OK. But Trump's court-ordered payments have not been made.

Of course, the donation to the political fund by the charity was plain illegal - the charity should never make political donations.

9. The Washington Post is not a "regressive opinionated for Hillary Blog"

And this is what the expert in the area said:

"I represent 700 nonprofits a year, and I've never encountered anything so brazen," said Jeffrey Tenenbaum, who advises charities at the Venable law firm in Washington. After The Washington Post described the details of these Trump Foundation gifts, Tenenbaum described them as "really shocking."

"If he's using other people's money - run through his foundation - to satisfy his personal obligations, then that's about as blatant an example of self-dealing (as) I've seen in a while," Tenenbaum said.

4. Trump brags about using 'other people's money' amid questions over charity use

Donald Trump bragged Tuesday there's "nothing like" using other people's money, hours after a report said he used more than $250,000 from his charitable organization to litigate lawsuits against his business interests.

Trump, while calling for building safe zones in Syria financed by Gulf states, vaunted the benefits of doing business with "OPM."

"It's called OPM. I do it all the time in business. It's called other people's money," Trump said. "There's nothing like doing things with other people's money because it takes the risk -- you get a good chunk out of it and it takes the risk."

Yes, he takes the money that other people donated to a charity, and then uses it to pay his for-profit-business debts. Or to buy portraits of himself:

The Washington Post has found that Trump bought not one but two portraits of himself with charity money. It was previously revealed that the Trump foundation paid $20,000 for a six-foot-tall painting of Trump that his wife Melania won at a charity auction. The whereabouts of this painting are still unknown, but the painter himself said he believes it was sent to one of Trump’s hotels. The second portrait however, appears to have been located.

The second portrait is modest compared to the first. It stands at a mere four feet tall and only cost the Trump Foundation $10,000. The painting, done by Havi Schanz, was sold in 2014 at an event held at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort. It then appears to have made its way to the Trump National Doral Miami golf resort.

And he uses charity money to bribe politicians, of course.
