I'm thinking that it's possible that Matthew could be the worst hurricane (damage-wise) to ever...

... strike Florida. A hurricane comes on land and causes damage for miles along the coastline and for 30 or more miles further inland, but this storm is like having a stack of a dozen or more hurricanes striking sequentially all along the Florida eastern coast...

1. Lucky for them they are on the weak side of the hurricane.

and storm surge is low. They are reporting a 10-12 foot storm surge.

7. Houses built following then through now are still referred to as "built to Andrew standards"...

.. in reference to the strengthening of building standards state-wide, post Andrew...

8. 175 mph winds are quite destructive..

After spending 3 days maneuvering in the eye of Typhoon Sally in the S. China sea in '64, I developed a strong level of respect for Mother Nature..!!
Trust me you don't want to EVER experience a "cat5" storm, up close and personal..!!!..

12. You are right....I live in tornado alley, so I respect Mother Nature as well...

When you hear the train, start prayin! That's what my Nanny always would say...I can't imagine a hurricane...at least a tornado is over in a few.

3. ...and the most valuable property

but if it never goes on shore then the most dangerous right quadrant never causes maximum damage. Seems like it could cause huge storm surge though pushing water against the shore

4. I was in Homestead 2 years after Andrew and it was still a waste land

Andrew cut across the state. This one looks to skirt it.

5. As indicated above the most expensive property is mostly on or immediately adjacent to a coast...

... so I'm thinking that the accumulation of damage may add up to reach a previously unseen figure...

10. Getting the dry or weak side of the storm rather than the full on assault is 2 different animals

and that looks like what's on the menu

As of 11pm

11. The prediction now is that Matthew may not QUITE make a Florida landfall. "Landfall" requires...

... that the centerpoint of the storm must engage land. But I don't like how the prediction out to the 12th of October seems to point the path to where it could curve under Florida and emerge into the Gulf...
