Mexican president cancels visit to DC scheduled for next week.

` WASHINGTON (AP) — The Latest on President Donald Trump (all times local):

12 p.m.

Mexico's president says he's informed the White House he has canceled a trip to Washington to meet with President Donald Trump amid tension over a border wall.

Trump had tweeted Thursday morning that if Mexico is unwilling to pay for a wall along the U.S. border, "then it would be better to cancel the upcoming meeting."

The developments come the day after Trump said he will jump-start construction of a U.S.-Mexico border wall and cut federal grants for immigrant-protecting "sanctuary cities." `

2. No surprise there. He has to do something to show he is resisting

Appearances matter in politics and machismo can override rationality in some cases.

4. The Mexican leadership doesn't have a choice really?

The question is now, did Trump know this would be the outcome and prepared for it? I think we would of had to. Mexico may at times near a failed state and be massively corrupt with little to nothing in the way of societal safety nets to the point they rely on their poor going to the U.S. for work rather than demanding reform. But they still feel they are entitled to respect they have not earned, or bargaining with that there is no reason for. Yes yes the moral reasons and such but morality is fluid and often a tool of the weaker parties to wield some power they do not have.

Mexico stands to lose millions of jobs during Trump's presidency and if Mexico doesn't fight the wall. The government's ability to show its people it is a strong government worth respecting will disappear and potentially create chaos as Mexico's poor will no longer enjoy the release valve that is America with hundreds of millions of U.S. Dollars flowing into Mexico via migrant in America or the wages earned by factory workers in Mexico. They will turn to their government for action and relief, and see the oligarch in their midst as the source of their trouble (which they are).

Mexico is stuck playing strong man till the end, sadly for them. America must put its success and accomplishment first. Once that is done, then we can look to our southern neighbor and see if there is any pie for them to share in. Personally I think we should house all our poor and food stamp recipients in Mexico. Keep the cities clean and the rich in them forced to pay wages that allow for living in the cities absent rent control and food stamps. Mexico gets money for babysitting our poor, and America wins with Mexico winning a little.

6. Nah, that would mean having to live in D.C.

I'll stay my happy lawyer self in Florida. I know folks who live in Virginia and commute two hours each way to work in D.C.. Totally not worth it, and living in that shit (been there three times in my life, once about five years ago) is not something I really want to put up with.

I'd rather keep my self country like, keep acquiring investment properties, and doing things I enjoy than answering to an ocean of people I'd rather burn to death with a flamethrower than listen to. I'm not a tactful person when dealing with fools and/or those who should not be suffered to live and boy oh boy D.C. is one of those places full of them types. I'd just end up running my mouth and hurting Trump unneccesarily.

7. I wonder if it were US citizens bringing drugs and crime into Mexico?

What would el presidente do then?

First off, illegal immigrants in Mexico go straight to jail.

9. Once Mexico pays for the wall

I hope the US continues to collect the import taxes just to make up for all the money they cost this country.

10. I think you're getting a bit ahead of yourself.

Mexico will not pay for that boondoggle. As their foreign secretary said, the US has every right to build a wall, but it doesn't have the right to make anybody else pay for its decisions.

If you want to mess with cross-border commerce, through tariffs, for example, who pays for it then is ultimately the American consumer.

If you try to tax remittances, Mexicans will find other ways to get their money to their families.
