Controversial gun that looks like a smartphone enters full production in US

Published time: 11 Jul, 2018 17:36

Is that a cell phone in your hand, or a handgun? The improbable question might soon become difficult to answer, as a controversial smartphone-shaped pistol enters full production in the US.

The firearm is the brainchild of Minnesota-based firm Ideal Conceal, with the manufacturer currently looking to fill over 12,000 pre-orders from eager customers and dealers across the US, after a string of production delays pushed the gun’s planned release from its planned 2016 debut.

When folded, the double-barreled derringer simply looks like a large-ish smartphone and cannot be fired. However, the ‘smartphone’ can unfold into a grip, activating the gun for shooting without the need for ‘cocking.’ It carries two rounds of .380 ammunition that can be fired sequentially.

A holster for the gun similar to a cell phone case is also available, and the gun can be activated and fired while still attached. A laser pointer can also be added.

The company is developing a holster that could carry additional rounds but acknowledges there may not be a pressing need for those.

6. Did you not catch the part where it has to be unfolded to fire?

When unfolded it looks nothing like a cellohone.

7. Like that will matter? How many "justifiable" cops shootings are there all ready

because the cops claim they thought the dead victim was holding a gun when it turned out to be a cellphone?

4. I don't see the appeal.

Two rounds of .380? For that big a form factor? $575?
Weight: 18.3 Ounces (Unloaded)
Length: 5.5″
Width: 0.75″
Height: 3″ (Collapsed; Folded In)
Height: 5.1875″ (Extended; Folded Out)

There are lots better choices that are more capable, at half the price, and are very concealable.

15. Another stupid novelty, like the "Pen Gun"

Some people will buy it, just to show it off and for the sheer novelty of it.

Then they'll wind up in a drawer, or the back of the safe.

But 2 shots of .380 and a PITA to reload? No thanks.

I'll stick with my Kimber Ultra Carry for now.

But in a pinch, I'd still rather carry my old Baby Browning.

8. I believe in the KISS principle (Keep It Simple Stupid) ...

If the shit hits the fan and my life or health is on the line I don’t want to unfold something that looks like a cell phone and have only two rounds of .380 ammo to protect myself with.

I personally prefer a S&W Model 642 with five rounds of .38 +P ammo. I can just pull it from the holster in my pants pocket and it will fire if I pull the trigger. No manual safety to worry about.

in a SmartCarry holster. When I need to skinny down a bit I'll carry my Ruger LC9s pro.

16. I put CT Laser grips on my 642

I have an IWB and pocket holster for my 642.

It's a "Summer clothes" alternative to my EDC Kimber Ultra Carry the rest of the year.

My only issue was the "less than ideal" sights on the 642. The Crimson Trace laser grips solve that for my aging eyes.

17. Since I live in Florida I wear summer clothes almost year around. ...

I have considered getting Crimson Trace laser grips for my 642. The sights are definitely marginal ar best.

18. There's another plus to them too ...

... that little red (or green) dot dancing on his chest or forehead, gives a bad guy a split second to seriously re-consider their career choice, so you may not have to pull the trigger.

Plus, in a pinch, you can aim from the hip, as opposed to getting a traditional sight picture.

It's not a substitute for normal sighting discipline and practice, but it offers you some other options when you might need them the most.

It helps a lot with dry fire practice too.

They sell them that fit all J-Frames.

20. You can catch them on sale too

The CT for J frames is one of their older models.

I've seen them on sale at local gun stores, Cabela's and Bass Pro.

CT is pushing the green lasers now so the red ones are getting cheaper and the red ones are just fine IMHO.

Plus, when you register online with CT, they give you free batteries for life.

...you may be carrying where it is illegal. Because if you are carrying where it is legal, go with something that will actually help you.

11. Yeah, I'm going to have to say this is probably counter-productive

Cool as it is, it's a stupid exercise in pushing the limits of Rights.

All you've done is give cover to any police shooting that turns out to have been a cellphone mistaken for a gun. Prior to this, fuck da police. Now, well it's a legitimate concern because someone made a gun that looks like a cellphone.

Good job asshats, almost wonder if you're doing this deliberately because you're a fellow traveler with that pig kid from Parkland.
