Wait, What??? Melania Trump's Parents Become Citizens Through 'Chain Migration'

Donald Trump has suggested ending most family-based immigration, the path to citizenship the first lady’s parents used

Associated Press

Thu 9 Aug 2018 20.01 EDT

Melania Trump’s parents were sworn in as US citizens on Thursday, completing a legal path to citizenship that their son-in-law has suggested eliminating.

Viktor and Amalija Knavs, both in their 70s, took the citizenship oath at a private ceremony in New York City. The Slovenian immigrants, a former car dealer and textile factory worker, had been living in the US as permanent residents.

The Knavses slipped in and out of a side entrance at a Manhattan federal building flanked by Department of Homeland Security police. Some workers inside didn’t know what was going on. The couple said little, other than Viktor telling a reporter “thank you” when asked how they felt about becoming Americans.

The Knavses’ lawyer said they had “travailed a wonderful journey”.

Lawyer Michael Wildes said the Knavses applied for citizenship on their own and didn’t get any special treatment. He confirmed that the first lady sponsored their green cards. Her husband, Donald Trump, has proposed ending most family-based immigration, which he refers to as “chain migration”.

11. Really?

While (mrs) Trump and her husband, Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump, have said she came to the United States legally, her own statements suggest she first came to the country on a short-term visa that would not have authorized her to work as a model.

(mrs) Trump has also said she came to New York in 1996, but the nude photo shoot places her in the United States in 1995, as does a biography published in February by Slovenian journalists.

In a January profile in Harper’s Bazaar, (mrs)Trump said she would return home from New York to renew her visa every few months. “It never crossed my mind to stay here without papers. That is just the person you are,” she said. “You follow the rules. You follow the law. Every few months you need to fly back to Europe and stamp your visa. After a few visas, I applied for a green card and got it in 2001.”

Instead, (mrs)Trump’s description of her periodic renewals in Europe are more consistent with someone traveling on a B-1 Temporary Business Visitor or B-2 Tourist Visa, which typically last only up to six months and do not permit employment.

If someone were to enter the United States on one of those visas with the intention of working, it could constitute visa fraud, according to Andrew Greenfield, a partner at the Washington office of Fragomen, Del Rey, Bernsen & Loewy, a firm that specializes in immigration law.

10. Legal immigrant sponsors family

members that come here legal, don't abuse welfare, and who work towards full citizenship.

Chain migration is Mohammad bring his terrorist cousins here to blow shit up and Miquel crossing the border illegally and getting California to accept his whole fucking family providing them welfare, college degrees, and never once saying become legal and a citizen.

Try again hypocrite.

12. Trump is against chain migration.

Even as his in-laws were going through the process, Mr. Trump was denouncing it. In November, he tweeted, “CHAIN MIGRATION must end now! Some people come in, and they bring their whole family with them, who can be truly evil. NOT ACCEPTABLE!”

President Trump has repeatedly and vehemently denounced what he calls “chain migration,” in which adult American citizens can obtain residency for their relatives.

18. And I agree with him.

It has become out of control, just because an immigrant has family doesn’t mean they are worth a shit.

The law doesn't test the worth of the applicant, it trusts the word of the Citizen vouching for their family members.

13. Pure hypocrisy

His in-laws obtained US citizenship through the very visa he has repeatedly opposed and sought to end.

They have not lived here at least 5 years to deserve becoming citizens, bypassing those who've been waiting the appropriate time.

Today they are blasting-out an e-mail railing against “chain migration”. Yes, the very same vehicle Melania’s parents used this week to become US citizens.
