Vatican and China make breakthrough deal on bishop appointments

VATICAN CITY — The Vatican and China said Saturday they had signed a "provisional agreement" over the appointment of bishops, a breakthrough on an issue that stymied diplomatic relations for decades and aggravated a split among Chinese Catholics. The deal resolved one of the major sticking points in recent years, with the Vatican agreeing to accept seven bishops who were previously named by Beijing without the pope's consent.

The development comes nearly seven decades after the Holy See and Beijing severed official relations. Beijing's long-held insistence that it must approve bishop appointments in China had clashed with absolute papal authority to pick bishops.

With the status of the seven bishops now reconciled, the Vatican said all bishops in China are now in communion with Rome -- even though the Catholic community in China is still split between Catholics who belong to the official Chinese church and those in the underground church who remained loyal to the pope.

"Pope Francis hopes that, with these decisions, a new process may begin that will allow the wounds of the past to be overcome, leading to the full communion of all Chinese Catholics," a Vatican statement said.

In other Chinese religion news:

WASHINGTON – Amnesty International is demanding China end its campaign of “systematic repression” and reveal the whereabouts of nearly 1 million predominantly Muslim people who have been “arbitrarily detained” in the country’s Xinjiang Uighur Autonomous Region.

The organization released a report Sunday night that includes interviews with more than 100 people outside of China whose relatives reportedly have been tortured, detained, or forced into “re-education camps" from a rural region of northwest China, known as the XUAR.

The human rights group called on world leaders to stop the Chinese government’s “vicious campaign against ethnic minorities.”

“Governments across the world must hold the Chinese authorities to account for the nightmare unfolding in the XUAR,” Nicholas Bequelin, Amnesty International’s East Asia Director, said in a statement released Sunday with the report.

2. the concordat of worms (1122)

ended a similar disagreement between emperor and pope (after a 50 year long world war) . the result is that a secilar power appointss the bishop, subject to approval by the pope.

i seriously doubt xi will ever walk barefoot in the snow to talk to francis.

there was a very similar investiture controversy in england, resolved by henry i agreeing to a similar solution..

3. Once more this Pope proves he is no Catholic.

He is a material heretic and more concerned with his image than the reality of the Church in China.

No Pope in history has made such 'deal' with a secular government. Francis has agreed to excommunicate the real underground bishops who stood up to the Marxist regime. He will also now allow the Communist Party to pick the bishops for the Chinese Patriotic Catholic Church. This is not the one, catholic, and apostolic Church any longer. Francis gets 'veto power' over only two bishops which the Chinese Communist Party will ignore. Additionally, all eight of the excommunicated heretical Chinese bishops of the Patriotic Church will now be granted full rites again even though two are married, others have come out for abortion, others have been involved in the imprisonment of dissident underground Catholic.

He and Parolin have betrayed the Chinese Catholics. He has betrayed the real bishops. He has betrayed Cardinal Zen. He has made a pact with a Dictator and a Marxist regime. I am sure the leftists will see it as a diplomatic victory. It is an abomination. I pray for his return to God daily.
