1. And those 20 people are in jail now for not obeying the mandatory evacuation order, right?

2. The problem is "mandatory" does not mean what it sounds like

There is no real legal mechanism to forcibly remove someone bound to stay. All it really means is that it legally absolves the authorities from any liability for failure to render aid.

6. And they try to punctuate that

with a scary little dose of reality....

anyone determined to stay should write their personal info on their inner arms with a black sharpie in case they are killed and someone has to identify the body.

I would think that would make people sit up and think about it.

PS...I'm glad that more and more shelters are becoming pet friendly. If I couldn't take my best friend with me, I think I would not be that eager to leave either.

11. Nor would we

I'd sooner, if not riding it out, keep driving out of danger and camp somewhere, than abandon the 4 legged kids.

3. My wife has family there that decided to stay against all advice

Not sure anyone has heard from them since yesterday.
I wasn't going to mention that fact but your comment made me change my mind.

Your compassion and concern is duly noted.

4. Those having ''compassion and concern'' got all of their family members out of there...

...your lack of doing that is duly noted.

7. You want to tell me how you force a couple in their 50's to leave there home from 1200 miles away?

I wasn't even aware of exactly where they lived until last night when my 86 year old mother-in-law was at the house and said she had spoken to her niece on Tuesday and begged her to leave.

21. Just responded in kind...

...from her/his attempted guilt trip "Your compassion and concern is duly noted." bullshit dig.........after I had asked the simple "1. And those 20 people are in jail now for not obeying the mandatory evacuation order, right?" question to his/her just post a subject title and a link OP without an comment.

24. If you feel my response was an attack on you

Feel free to alert on it and let a jury decide.

I originally posted a link to video footage showing the devastation in Mexico beach without commentary and you immediately make the comment you made about arresting those that didn’t evacuate. Your comment came across as ignorant and callous to me

5. Many people couldn't leave...the judgement I am seeing is awful

And a lot of the people judging consider themselves good Christians..

I know of one family that stayed because they just didn't have the money to leave or even board their house up..no one has heard from them since lunch yesterday. Their family is trying to get in to see what's going on.

I hope your wife's family made it ok...

8. I sincerely hope that they are alright.

As we get older, it can be difficult for various legitimate reasons to 'get out' when some increment weather event is about to or is occurring.

Our prayers for you and your family that they are safe and didn't suffer too much loss in this devastation.

12. Thank you, appreciated more than you know.

I spoke to my wife about 20 mins ago and as far as she knows no one has heard from them but that doesn't necessarily mean anything.

13. I have family still in NC

and it was difficult to get through after the last hurricane hit there. It was days before we finally got in touch with them.

Exactly, being hopeful is the best default position to take.

14. That's what I told my wife

Assume everything is ok and they just can't communicate until you know that isn't the case.
Nothing else you can do really.

and pray if that gives you comfort and strength.

26. Turns out wife has 2 cousins and their spouses that lived in Mexico Beach

One cousin and spouse left the area the other did not.

Still no word from the one that stayed behind, her sister (the one that left the area) said there is no way for them to get to where she was/is to check on her yet.

27. At least y'all know one cousin is safe

but that is very distressing to learn that right now, there is no way to find out if the other one is.

Our prayers continue and I will add your cousin to my daily Rosary.

They were all very close when my wife and cousins were children.
Mother-in-law baby sat the cousins frequently when they were little.

33. Thank God!

Homes and a business can be replaced. The loss of an animal is tragic though. Thankfully they survived and can rebuild.

You are most welcome. My best to you and your family.

helping people without the means to do so themselves evacuate? Or are you just a simple soul without a clue?

31. That is not the point.

The point is that not everyone is capable of getting out. The very aged, the infirm and those without means of transportation must rely on local government or the generosity of strangers and neighbors.
