so sad...the beaches of the panhandle are gorgeous...so many happy memories along there...

This area is relatively rural and largely poor. I hope those two factors don't end up letting these people to be forgotten.

5. Rebuild, but not on a barrier island in a hurricane area.

Look at it on Google satellite view. Mexico Beach is a wide spot in a long barrier island with the Gulf on one side and swamps inland. So even though the map view doesn't show blue inland, the land there is lower than along the shore.

Anything built on barrier islands like this should be regarded as a temporary structure.

7. I know...I live in a tornado zone, so I know what total devastation of an area can be.

but not on that scale...I feel so sorry for these folks. It's such a beautiful area and it hasn't been taken over by bougie tourists yet, although it was starting...
