As Immigrant Farmworkers Become More Scarce, Robots Replace Humans

Yet Mr. Montoya, a 28-year-old immigrant’s son, recently took a job at a lettuce-packing facility, where it is wet, loud, freezing — and much of the work is physically taxing, even mind-numbing.

Now, though, he can delegate some of the worst work to robots.

Mr. Montoya is among a new generation of farmworkers here at Taylor Farms, one of the world’s largest producers and sellers of fresh-cut vegetables, which recently unveiled a fleet of robots designed to replace humans — one of the agriculture industry’s latest answers to a diminishing supply of immigrant labor.

The smart machines can assemble 60 to 80 salad bags a minute, double the output of a worker.

Enlisting robots made sound economic sense, Taylor Farms officials said, for a company seeking to capitalize on Americans’ insatiable appetite for healthy fare at a time when it cannot recruit enough people to work in the fields or the factory.

A decade ago, people lined up by the hundreds for jobs at packing houses in California and Arizona during the lettuce season. No more.

“Our work force is getting older,” said Mark Borman, chief operating officer of Taylor Farms. “We aren’t attracting young people to our industry. We aren’t getting an influx of immigrants. How do we deal with that? Innovation.”

16. You got it backwards

If Americans weren't offering illegal jobs, the workers wouldn't follow them here.

For anyone who actually feels we have an immigration problem.. That's the first, last and only problem that needs solved. End illegal employment, and you end illegal immigration. No grift wall needed.

17. Nah.

Even if no jobs existed for them, liberals would still welcome illegal aliens and terrorists with open arms. Get 'em set with free housing, free medical care, food stamps, energy subsidies, free cell phones, and all the other trappings of life in our nation.

Because all liberals see is potential Democrat voters.

But back in reality, If there stopped being a bunch of illegal hiring done, usually by Republicans, Illegal migration would dry up like death valley in a heat wave

19. So YOU blame the DEMAND for illegals instead of on the SUPPLY of illegals, eh?? Do YOU use...

...that same logic for solving some of our other societal issues, like for example:

A) The opioid drug problem...so YOU blame the drug USER instead of the drug makers/doctors over prescribing/etc??

B) The gun violence problem...so YOU blame the trigger puller instead of the illegal gun suppliers/dealers/etc???

C) The US trade imbalance with China...so YOU blame the ones buying the made in china products instead of the US companies that ran to china to get their products made dirt cheap using slave labor/children nor the US govt that allows these companies to make products in countries that don't follow any EPA/EEOC/OSHA/etc regulations that all US based companies must comply with???

3. Technology will replace many human workers over a short time.

An overpopulated world will seem even worse with the added useless humans to the already abundance masses of human garbage.

the birth of burdening types.

21. We can't get Americans anymore. I don't know why.

When I married my (current) husband 35 years ago there was always lots of high school boys looking for work after school and through the summer. Now we can't get them. Back then we had a lot of acres were under hand line irrigation - every single line had to be lifted by hand and walked. Now we all center pivots and wheel lines, so the work is much, much easier, (push button) and we even have an ATV for them to ride, but they are not interested. We run ads in the paper, word of mouth and FaceBook.

Years ago the high school boys were wanting $ to buy cars, now the local boys must get their cars bought for them by their parents, because there is nowhere else for them to work.

My son is having to go to all these fields to irrigate and there's 20 miles between some fields, so he's spending all day doing it, seven days a week.

24. Probably some of that and some of society saying working in the field is beneath us type of work...

"now the local boys must get their cars bought for them by their parents, because there is nowhere else for them to work."

...I bought my first car with the money I saved up over years from having a paper route. My parents would probably have been arrested for child abuse today for doing that to me.

26. My parents might have ended up in the slammer as well.

My husband's parents had him working at 10 years old, driving tractor & hand milking cows. I had an old friend who told me he was picking cotton besides his mother at 5 years old and at by 10 he was doing field work behind a mule.

Towards the end of us having high school boys work I received a phone call from one of the mother's saying she wasn't letting her son work that day because it looked like rain. I told her they can get wet anyway from the irrigation, she didn't care. It pissed me off because at the time I was flood irrigating 40 acres alone, and had to get into a ditch with water up to my chin to release water. (It was a system set up in the 1880's which we used for 100 yrs. Most men can stand on top of the dam and pull up boards to let water down but I am short and very pregnant at the time so it was safer to slid down the bank and swim/wade).
