U.S. Navy Admiral Scott Stearney Found Dead in Apparent Suicide

Vice Admiral Scott Stearney, who oversaw the US Middle East operations, was found dead in an "apparent suicide".

In a video posted on Saturday afternoon, Chief of Naval Operations Admiral John Richardson confirmed that Stearney, who was the commander of the military branch’s Fifth Fleet in Bahrain, was found dead in his residence in the Persian Gulf island nation, adding that “no foul play is suspected” in his death and that the department will launch an investigation.

"The Naval Criminal Investigative Service and the Bahraini Ministry of Interior are cooperating on the investigation, but at this time no foul play is suspected," Richardson said.

3. Colonel Francis Gabreski USAAF/USAF 34.5 kills in the ETO and Korea

''While waiting to board a plane that would fly him back to the United States on leave, he discovered that a mission was scheduled for that morning. He took his bags off the transport and got permission to "fly just one more." It was a fateful decision. During a second strafing pass, his wing tips hit a small rise in the runway, bending the prop tips. This created a violent vibration, forcing him to make a crash landing. Uninjured, he jumped out of the crashed plane and ran toward deep woods with German soldiers in pursuit. He eluded them for five days, but was finally captured and taken to Stalag Luft I, a permanent prisoner-of-war camp. After the camp was liberated by the Russians in April 1945''

''Profiles In Aviation: Francis S Gabreski’s Perseverance Transformed Weak Flying Skills Into Heroic Aviation Career

Gabby was certainly no natural as a pilot. In fact he inspired so little confidence in his instructor that he was discouraged from continuing his flight instruction. But the bug had bitten Gabby hard. After getting his academic game back on track he enlisted in the United States Army Air Corps (USAAC) at the beginning of his sophomore year. Aviation Cadet Gabreski underwent primary flight training flying PT-17 Stearman trainers at Parks Air College. Gabreski still lacked piloting skills as a trainee, even facing the dreaded elimination check ride before advancing to basic flight training.''
