GoFundMe is refunding all donations made to the 'Fund the Wall' campaign

The GoFundMe campaign that aimed to raise $1 billion for the border wall is shutting down, and the $20 million raised will be refunded to donors.

A GoFundMe spokesman, Bobby Whithorne, told INSIDER that the campaign's founder, Brian Kolfage, initially promised donors that all donations would be used to pay for a wall along the US-Mexico border, like the one President Donald Trump has proposed, if it met its $1 billion goal.

"However, that did not happen," Whithorne said

18. 100% refund of donations

GoFundMe doesn’t take a cut of the donation. They ask for a tip along with the donation to cover their costs.

28. ''GoFundMe doesnt take a cut of the donation''...really, every penny you donate goes to directly to

the person/organization the donation is for? There are no handling fees/processing fees/etc taken out of your donation, eh??

30. What I already said is correct

Since November 2017, GoFundMe has not taken a cut of donations for US based fundraising projects.

When you donate via credit card, the payment processor charges a fee on that. So when a person donates $100 via credit card, GoFundMe doesn’t get the full $100. But they do give 100% of what they receive to the fundraiser.

Anyone running a business that takes credit cards has to deal with that. You never get the full amount from the card company.

So you first asked the question “ Refunds minus a small ''handling'' fee or full 100% refunds?”

The answer is 100% refunds. The credit card processing fee is refunded when the charge is reversed/refunded.

Now you are asking if 100% goes to the fundraising party. The answer to that is no, the credit card processor charges a fee.

However, GoFundMe does not take a cut of the donation. Their business model is based on tips.

32. Ok

Well first there is the info provided by GoFundMe itself. There is some right on the home page:
https://www.gofundme.com

And then some more details here:
https://www.gofundme.com/c/free-fundraising

Here is a Bloomberg article on it:
https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2017-11-30/gofundme-will-no-longer-take-a-cut-of-some-donations

Or a Verge article:
https://www.theverge.com/2017/11/30/16720880/gofundme-drops-us-personal-crowdfunding-campaign-tipping

If you need more information, please google it yourself. This conversation has become boring.

3. I have no idea why you guys are happy about this

A time line was set, the deal from the get go was if they didn't raise x amount of money in y time the money was going to be refunded.

They didn't meet the goal, so they refunded the money.

29. I would guess some of the glee

comes from knowing (or guessing) that cheerleaders for the wall weren't willing to sacrifice more in order to get their billion dollar goal.

If something means so damned much, you do whatever you can...or have to...in order to get it.

It looks like nobody really cared. So much for the "national emergency" bit.

Now you've even got Last-Word Larry's leg tingling.
But seeing some people believe math formulas have an expiration date, selling this to them should be relatively easy

Which one of the “fellers” are you? Chuckie mistook me for saying he was the Leader. We all know that he is not. So, tell us, which one of the clubhouse “fellers” are you? And what have you been plotting in the clubhouse? Oh wait, let’s get some hate mail sent!!! Great idea, Mumbles.

20. Awww, Chuckie. Little Lulu was quite popular in its day as

all us kids who read know. It was slightly (not much) before my time, but as a kid who collected comic books, I did appreciate them.

Tubby and his “fellers” (only 3 or 4) plotting mischief in their exclusive clubhouse has a great deal of applicability areound here, don’t ya’ think?

25. It's weird how you took my declaration that I don't care for reading novels as a claim

that I don't read, period. I read quite a bit. Mostly history. I'm a fan of ancient Rome and the Peloponnesian Wars.

But because I don't read an old comic you make absurd claims.

Unsurprising. You have repeatedly demonstrated that you can't even understand simple things like verb tense.

26. ...I dont care for reading novels...

is quite different than “I’ve read maybe a half dozen ‘fictional books’ in my life.” One can hardly appreciate Western Civilisation without having read the great works of fiction that define it, from Aeschylus to Chaucer to Fielding to Fitzgerald.

But I like reading about Greece and Rome as well. Do you prefer original sources such as Plutarch and Tacitus or expansive overviews like J. B. Bury and Gibbon? Bury’s History of Greece is one of only about 100 or so physical books I still have on my bookshelf. It’s a great work. Your thoughts?

27. I'm a fan of myths. They are a subset of fiction, obviously; but I

don't read novels for the most part.

The last book about Rome I read was Livy.

19. Why the fuck would you want to boycott GoFundMe? Are you stupid?

Someone (Brian Kolfage) set up a GoFundMe for the wall. He said that if the goal wasn’t met, he would refund the money. The goal wasn’t met and he refunded the money.

Now you want to boycott the platform he used?

If you are upset about it being refunded here are the people to complain to:

http://webuildthewall.us/team/

They are the ones that refunded it.

21. And if Kolfage hadn't been

such a naughty boy previously, donors to this fund might never be getting their money back:

"The thousands of dollars Brian Kolfage raised for wounded veterans reportedly never arrived at military hospitals.

The national effort to fund President Donald Trump’s border wall via GoFundMe was spearheaded by a veteran who allegedly kept money from a previous fundraiser he claimed would go to wounded veterans, according to The Hill.

Brian Kilfage also ran right-wing websites that were booted from Facebook after the social media platform began cracking down on pages propagating fake news."
