Wells Fargo? Well fscked at the moment: Data center up in smoke, bank website, app down

Wells Fargo customers have been unable to access their online bank accounts for more than seven hours today – after smoke knackered one of its data centers.

Starting around 6am Pacific Time (2pm UTC), the American bank's online portal and its mobile application have been totally unusable. There are also reports of cards being rejected by cash machines and stores.

"We’re experiencing system issues due to a power shutdown at one of our facilities, initiated after smoke was detected following routine maintenance," the bank said in a statement. "We’re working to restore services as soon as possible. We apologize for the inconvenience."

It added on Twitter: "We apologize to our customers who may be experiencing an issue with our online banking and mobile app. Thanks for your patience while we research this issue. If you are impacted, please check back here for updates."

1. Too funny.

I have an old Wells account that I've never cancelled because they don't charge me any fees.

I got this email from Wells on 2/6:

-------------------------------------------------------------------
New year. New look. Continued commitment.

At Wells Fargo, we are constantly seeking out ways to enhance security and help you stay safe online. Since this includes being careful when opening unfamiliar emails, we want you to know that you’ll soon start seeing communications from us that look different, including a revised logo and stagecoach.

2. According to downdetector they still are having some problems

What amazes me is the comments on reddit by people who only bank with WF. They can't buy lunch, gas their car, etc.

I have Visa, Mastercard and Discover cards from banks different than the two where I do checking. Redundancy is your friend.

4. This is why I always keep a few thousand in cash

on hand. Doesn't help to have money in the bank if the ATMs don't work.

7. They are lying to people. There is no way a bank of that size has

A “single point of failure facility” that brings down everything for as long as it has.

If this is really how their IT infrastructure is designed, people should be fired. Not some guy in IT, but the ENTIRE top management. Banks spend tons of money for exactly this scenario, I find it impossible to believe that WF didn’t.

8. I've been in IT for about 36 years now, some of that at financial institutions

I have yet to see a fully functional, reliable backup infrastructure at any place where I have ever worked.

That said, I would have expected a company the size of Wells Fargo to get most of its business functions back up within a few hours at most.
