Trump said he wouldnt cut Medicaid, Social Security, and Medicare. His 2020 budget cuts all 3.

--------------- President Donald Trump’s 2020 budget breaks one of his biggest campaign promises to voters: that he would leave Medicaid, Social Security, and Medicare untouched. “I’m not going to cut Social Security like every other Republican and I’m not going to cut Medicare or Medicaid,” Trump told the Daily Signal, a conservative publication affiliated with the Heritage Foundation, in 2015. more ----------------- https://www.msn.com/en-us/money/markets/trump-said-he-wouldnt-cut-medicaid-social-security-and-medicare-his-2020-budget-cuts-all-3/ar-BBUGBog?ocid=spartandhp MAGA, 1 lie at a time. Trump doesn't seem like the kind of executive who would have the patience to actually review the numbers in the budget.

3. Salammi....
A reduction in the rate of growth IS NOT a cut..it's Math sparky
For example....a projected $500 Billion budget say in '18(hypothetical)..supposed to be $600Bil in '19 because of baseline budget BS...moved back to $525Bil for '19......IS NOT a $75Billion cut.......it's a $25Billion increase over previous yr spending. It's a reduction in the rate of growth.....didn't go from $500B-'18 to $425B-'19(a True cut).....just a reduction in the growth....yet STILL grew. |

20. lets make it simple.
say inflation is growing at 2% a year on average.
If you freeze spending, that becomes an indirect cut. You're welcome. |

FreeWheelBurning (5,436 posts)
23. No it doesn't
A cut is a cut wether it be indirect or not. Not keeping up with inflation does not equate to a cut. A cut is when the total allocated for the new year is less than the total allocated for the current year. You don't get to make up definitions just because you posted a falsehood and are now scrambling to not look uniformed.

34. Medicare is NOT inflation indexed....you obviously have NO clue what you are talking about do you?
Social Security is....COLA adjustments are indexed in inflation...SS recipients just got a 2% bump in the January payment.
Benefits INCREASED...because stuff you buy might cost more DOES NOT mean the Benefit was cut.... Again...a reduction in the rate of GROWTH is still growth......you got more this time than you did last time....the dictionary definition of an increase. |

Like your EBT card...if you get $150 this yr/month and expect, were told you would get $170 next yr/month... but only get $160/month...that's NOT a "cut"
If it went from $150 to 140.....that's a cut |

as most people use the word, if you are getting a hundred a month in SS, you will still be getting the $100, even if Congress passed his proposed budget.
He's trying to save some costs, if his proposal works, maybe drug costs, etc go down, if not the government will still continue to buy medicine on Medicare. |

11. I read the proposed budget. Did you?
He did not cut Social Security or Medicare. There is a 1 bn cut in Medicaid in 2020 and even that jumps back up in 2021. Also, the Medicaid line item is not just Medicaid. It also includes "Market-Based Health Care Grant". I admit to not knowing exactly what that is. I am pointing it out because it is possible that Medicaid is not being cut while the "Market-Based Health Care Grant" is being cut.
Social Security 2018 - 982 bn 2019 1,041 bn 2020 - 1,102 bn 2021 - 1,165 bn Medicare 2018 - 582 bn 2019 645 bn 2020 - 679 bn 2021 - 711 bn Medicaid 2018 - 389bn 2019 419 bn 2020 - 418 bn 2021 - 491bn Here is a link for the budget. Its time to start researching this stuff for yourself and stop relying on other people to spoon feed you. The proposed budget is in a table on page 110. https://www.whitehouse.gov/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/budget-fy2020.pdf |

You should stop digging and move on to the changes in benefits you referred to. That might actually be a topic worthy of discussion. A semantic argument centered on you trying to redifine the meaning of the word "cut" in an effort to cover for the falsehood you posted in your OP is not.

31. This is what you quoted from the article
"Their intentions are to cut benefits under Medicaid and Social Security. The impact on Medicare is more complicated, which I’ll get into a bit later."
Did you just blindly accept that statement or do you know what the writer is talking about? I'll admit that I have not come across any details regarding changes to benefits in any of these programs. The author in your cited article fails to detail what the current benefits are so there is no way to make a contrast between the current programs and the proposed changes to those programs. I thought since you quoted the article that maybe you knew. Was I wrong to think that? |

This has been pointed out to you numerous times. A cut has a specific meaning. You can assign any meaning to the word that you want but nobody else is obligated to agree to your make believe definition.
Also, the proposed budget is not holding spending at current levels. I gave you the link. The budget for these programs is increased every year except for the one year I mentioned. |
