Monsanto Ordered To Pay $2bn To Couple In New Roundup Trial

A jury in California on Monday ordered Bayer-owned Monsanto to pay more than $2 billion damages to a couple that sued on grounds the weed killer Roundup caused their cancer, lawyers said.

The award was the latest in a series of court defeats for Monsanto over Roundup. The company insists the glyphosate-based product is not linked to cancer.

The couple's legal team described the damages award as "historic," saying it totaled $2.055 billion after adding in slightly more than $55 million in compensatory damages.

"The jury saw for themselves internal company documents demonstrating that, from day one, Monsanto has never had any interest in finding out whether Roundup is safe," said plaintiff's counsel Brent Wisner.

"Instead of investing in sound science, they invested millions in attacking science that threatened their business agenda."

1. I love seeing Monsanto get severely spanked, but

don't hold ur breath waiting to see the $$$ . . . . .

from the link:

"Just two months after the acquisition was completed, Monsanto lost a case to a school groundskeeper suffering from terminal non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. He had sued the company over the glyphosate weedkillers Roundup and Ranger Pro.

Monsanto was initially ordered to pay $289 million to Johnson, before the damages were reduced to $78.5 million."

Get it?

Monsanto will spend millions on lawyers to save their money - that time saved them over $200 million . . .

(sigh)

2. No way in hell will this judgement stand at $2b. I used to do commercial litigation, ie. Love Canal,

Exxon Valdez, Consumers Power nuke plant and others and our happiest days were when the court/jury came back with such outrageous verdicts.

We all then knew many, many more "billable hours" were in our future.

I miss it sometimes but not the airport hassles.

4. Monsanto managed to contaminate the entire corn crop with their GMO corn that

was developed for the biofuel corn crop to get higher yields.

Now all the corn for human and animal consumption is Frankenstein Corn.

Fuck Monsanto.
