Greek elections: PM admits defeat as New Democracy near win

Greece's Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras has admitted defeat in the country's snap general election. Centre-right opposition party New Democracy, led by Kyriakos Mitsotakis, is closing in on a dramatic win. They have 39.7% of the vote so far, with Mr Tsipras's leftist Syriza party in second place with 31.6%. Current projections would give New Democracy an outright majority, as the winner receives 50 extra seats in parliament.

So far about 75% of districts have returned their results.

The prime minister-elect told supporters he had been given a strong mandate for change. "The country proudly raises its head again," he told the crowd in the capital Athens, saying he would be a president for all because Greeks were "too few to stay divided". Speaking as the results became clear, Mr Tsipras confirmed he had called Mr Mitsotakis to offer him his congratulations.....

And, for the enlightenment of those who insist the younger generations are moving "further left".....

….and New Democracy has counted many 18-24 year olds among its supporters.

1. The left has lost it's mind worldwide.

It jettisoned the people it traditionally represented, a socially conservative working class that wanted safe work environments and fair wages, for a motley collection of post-modernists that aren't so much a political movement as a complete freak show. If you are a bizarre fringe group or you believe yourself to be some sort of downtrodden victim, the left represents you. If you want to destroy the economy and cause human misery in the name of "saving mother Earth", the left is for you.

Now, the socially conservative working class, which is most people, only has one way to go. I keep waiting for the left to wake up from it's fever dream, but it doesn't look like it's going to happen.

2. The Nordic region seems to like social democrats

There are new Leftist governments in Iceland (Katrín Jakobsdóttir is an Icelandic politician serving as the 28th and current Prime Minister of Iceland since 2017. She is the member of the Althing for the Reykjavík North constituency since 2007. She became deputy chairperson of the Left-Green Movement in 2003 and has been their chairperson since 2013.) Sweden (Kjell Stefan Löfven is a Swedish politician serving as Prime Minister of Sweden since 2014, and Leader of the Social Democratic Party since 2012, Denmark (Mette Frederiksen is a Danish politician who is the Prime Minister of Denmark since 2019. Following the 2019 general election in which the opposition red bloc of left-wing and centre-left parties (Social Democrats, Social Liberals, Socialist People's Party, Red–Green Alliance, the Faroese Social Democratic Party and Greenland's Siumut) won a majority of 93 out of 179 seats in the Folketing, Frederiksen was commissioned by Queen Margrethe II to lead the negotiations to form a new government; and Finland (Antti Juhani Rinne (born 3 November 1962) is a Finnish politician who has served as Prime Minister of Finland since 2019. He has been the chairman of the Social Democratic Party since 9 May 2014.
Only Norway has a center right government in the region. Erna Solberg is a Norwegian politician serving as Prime Minister of Norway since 2013 and Leader of the Conservative Party since May 2004.
