Tropical Depression Forecast to Form in Gulf of Mexico This Week, Could Strengthen Into Hurricane

•"A tropical depression is likely to form by the end of the week" near the northern Gulf Coast.
•If the depression's winds reach 39 mph, it would become Tropical Storm Barry.

Doyle Rice, USA TODAY Published 11:10 a.m. ET July 8, 2019 | Updated 6:23 p.m. ET July 8, 2019

After several quiet weeks, the National Hurricane Center said Monday that there's an 80% chance a tropical depression will form by the end of the week in the Gulf of Mexico.

If the depression's winds reach 39 mph, it would become Tropical Storm Barry.

"Regardless of development, this system has the potential to produce heavy rainfall along portions of the northern and eastern U.S. Gulf Coast later this week," the hurricane center said.

AccuWeather senior meteorologist Adam Douty warned that "residents from western Florida to eastern Louisiana should especially remain alert for an increase in downpours and a heightened risk for flooding later this week and into the start of the weekend."

1. It's not going to be a hurricane, genius

But You can always hope, right?

Pray to Allah. You never can tell sometimes.

2. Having lived in south Florida for some 20 years I always hated when the alarmist media did this...

This is a nothing burger and by making such a big deal about these nothing burgers they cause people to stop taking what they say seriously.

People who still have the blue tarps on their roof from last year will hate this but it is the rainy season so....

6. Metorologists get bored this time of year

Winter fronts are gone and they are relegated to giving cookie-cutter reports of pop-up thunderstorms from summertime heat. When a tropical wave crops up, suddenly they are relevant again and like supermen, they change into their hero outfits. It could be in the Pacific headed out to sea - doesn't matter - they spring into action.

Sometimes I almost feel sorry for them.

9. Despite

advances in weather forecasting, meteorology is still not an exact science,.

You wanna see what ignorance and arrogance will get people in the end? Read "Isaac's Storm" about the Galveston hurricane of 1900. It could happen again.

True, some people are going to be lulled into a false sense of "Meh...it's gonna be a nothingburger" and end up dying.

Hurricanes have their own rules.

10. "Hurricanes have their own rules. ". Especially ones that form from a low that came

down from the north into the super-warm Gulf without definitive steering currents.

Have/do you live in hurricane country? 14 years in Houston and tracking 'canes was my passion.

20. No....

I live in New England where they are uncommon but not extremely rare. I've always been fascinated by them.

I guess I can afford to be a little blase about them, as I'm inland about 100 miles west of Boston and about the same northward from the CT shore. No major flooding concerns or extreme winds here, although there's always the possibility of a dirt road washout like what happened during Hurricane Irene in 2011.

My biggest ever weather fear is tornadoes.

3. Had you bothered

to click the link you would have seen that the article itself mentioned the possibility it COULD become a hurricane.

"Tropical depression forecast to form in Gulf of Mexico this week, could strengthen into hurricane"

But hell...why waste two seconds looking at a link when it's way easier to assume someone just invented a statement you can then insult him for?

good grief

In any case, the problem was that you were bashing the OP for writing that a possible hurricane might happen when it was the TITLE of the post he was linking to. He didn't make it up.

If winds strengthen to 75 MPH or above, it's a hurricane. Nobody claimed it would be a CAT 4 or CAT 5

sigh

12. I knew they would say its a hurricane at the last minute

One minute they announced the pressure indicated it was weakening, then they announced it was making landfall and the winds were 75 mph

They were going to have their hurricane no matter what.

Regardless, this storm is a puppy dog. Dry air has been cutting it down for two days, but I'm glad you are happy.

The "hurricane" claim is a lie though.

I apologize for calling you a genius. Everybody in the forum knows the LAST thing you are is a genius.

14. 20 minutes after the media reported it was a hurricane they reported it was below 74mph

such bullshit.

I knew they were going to do that.

When the storm is long gone you will still be a hater of this country

19. He's no smarter than the idiot politicians he worships

I love these tropical storms in the Gulf early in the year. They churn up the water and remove heat that real hurricanes would otherwise use for energy later on.

water the garden this morning. Tomatoes and marijuana plants doing exceptionally well this year.
