Officer Fatally Shoots Self In 8th NYPD Suicide This Year

AUGUST 13, 2019 - 3:17 PM

NEW YORK (WCBS 880) -- A 35-year-old police officer took his own life early Tuesday morning, marking the eighth NYPD suicide this year and the sixth since June.

The seven-year veteran of the force was off-duty when he shot himself in the head in his Yonkers home at 3:30 a.m.

Reports indicate the officer left a note and his fiancee was home at the time.

The officer was assigned to a precinct in the Bronx and often worked a detail at Yankee Stadium. His name has not been released.

NYPD Chief of Department Terrence Monahan tells WNYC they are taking this seriously.

"We look at this is there a contagion, this is something that psychologists and psychiatrists talk about when one happens, that there may be more," he said. "We had averaged four to five suicides over the last few years, currently this year we have eight suicides. That is a very large number."
