Pompeo Argues US War in Afghanistan Was Successful

Says 19 year conflict was 'a real achievement'

September 5, 2019CategoriesNewsTagsAfghanistan, Pompeo

While the Trump Administration has yet to officially sign the peace deal with the Taliban in Afghanistan, the clearest sign yet that they’ll do so came in a new interview with Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.

While US officials have often been unrealistically rosy-eyed about the state of the war, Pompeo took the talking points to a new level, and now is arguing effectively that the US has won the war in Afghanistan, and “delivered” on all of its goals.

The US has repeatedly redefined what the war’s goal actually was, both because stabilizing Afghanistan never really happened, and because officials wanted a metric that wouldn’t show a loss. Pompeo, however, argued that al-Qaeda is defeated and a “shadow of its former self in Afghanistan.”

Pompeo said this was a “real achievement,” and that the 19 years of war had “greatly reduced the risk that an attack on the United States of America would emanate from Afghan soil.” The deal with the Taliban has as one of its centerpieces a Taliban promise to keep al-Qaeda and ISIS out of Afghanistan.

2. What bullshit school failed to teach you history?

Most wars end through negitiated settlement. Rare are the ones that see a clearly defined victor. Even rarer for intra-national conflicts. Those tend to linger for generations. Shining Path has been kicking along 50 or more years now. Generational wwars are the norm.

3. us withdrawal from afghanistan leads to the fall of siagon replay.

us remaining in Afghanistan results in as many generations as we allow of costly and bloody conflict with, well, you tell me, what positive result could we hope for?

1. the Taliban are far more efficient at reducing opium production than we are
2 the pipelines are 20 tears late and may no longer be needed (and will never be guardable)
3. rare earth? maybe we should try buying it or finding another source
4. their women. yea, right. they don't think their women, or their boys, are any of our business.
5. terror attacks on the us can be planned anywhere. most likely riyadh.
6. democracy? capitalism? rule of law? be serious.

4. Same as it ever was.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said the US spent $ 30 billion plus last year on the Afghan war.

Claimed they killed 1000 Taliban in the last ten days, on Face the Nation 9-8-19 Sunday.
