Dutch military police dispatched to 'suspicious situation' on plane at Amsterdam airport

The Dutch gendarmerie is investigating a “suspicious situation” on board an aircraft at Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport. Reports from inside the airport hint at an event with “major consequences for the population.”

The gendarmerie announced that they were investigating the situation at around 7.30 local time. According to De Telegraaf, Dutch emergency management authorities issued a ‘Grip 3 report,’ a procedure usually initiated in case of “an incident or serious event with major consequences for the population.”

Emergency services, including a trauma helicopter, are arriving at the scene, and several departure gates have reportedly been locked down.Photos shared on social media show areas of the airport cordoned off with police tape.

The captain of an airplane at the center of a massive police operation at Amsterdam’s Schiphol airport activated a hijacking alert as passengers boarded, Dutch media reports. The airport is on lockdown as police respond.

Dutch gendarmerie announced they were responding to a “suspicious situation” on board a parked aircraft on Wednesday evening. According to NOS news, the plane’s captain had signalled by code that a hijacking attempt was underway, as passengers boarded.

Police have not yet confirmed reports of a hijacking or hostage situation, but heavily armed officers with the Special Interventions Service have descended on the grounded airplane, and trauma helicopters and ambulances have arrived at the airport.

The aircraft is said to be an Air Europa Airbus A330, scheduled to fly to Madrid.
