'Not going to survive this': Top Navy SEAL under threat after Trump's Eddie Gallagher intervention

Following the firing of Navy Secretary Richard Spencer on Sunday, speculation now centers on how another Navy official will fare in the wake of the Eddie Gallagher case.

Rear Adm. Collin Green, who leads Navy Special Warfare Command, pursued actions against Gallagher after the SEAL was found not guilty of various war crimes. Against a tweeted countermand from President Trump, Green last week ordered a review against Gallagher for posing with other SEALs — who were not punished — alongside a dead enemy fighter.

Military lawyers told the Washington Examiner that Green would not have made such a controversial move without some kind of “top cover” from Navy leadership. Now, with top cover from Spencer gone, some observers are looking at what's next for Green.

Brad Bailey, a former Navy SEAL and Gallagher supporter, told the Washington Examiner that Green’s review has caused serious backlash within the community. “Green is not going to survive this,” he said. “People are just tired of it. They’re tired of him dragging us through the mud.”

Bryan McGrath, a former Navy destroyer captain, believes Green will fall on his sword. “I suspect Green may request to retire,” he said. “To call this unusual does injustice to the word. It is bizarre.”

Green has been grappling with the SEAL force's image following several scandals, including instances of drug use and drinking while on deployment.

8. Yeah, I know it's a big deal to Muslims.

It's not our job to prosecute Service Members for violations of Muslim (in)sensibilities.

9. The rule over there are no alcohol

There was a lot of it anyway.

Prosecutions were not based on muslim law but violation of command directives against it. In reality you had to get caught doing something stupid to get prosecuted. Drunk on duty, accident while under the influence kind of thing. I got to clean up some of the issues from such events.

10. I get the legal basis. I vehemently disagree with the command.

We deny warriors the coping mechanisms warriors have employed since forever, and then we sit around looking amazed when we lose more warriors to suicide than enemy action.

11. Mixed feelngs on that

When the hammer drops, you need to be at your best, and over there, it could drop at any time, especially in the FOBs. Back in the larger base camps, you had better and more secure down time, but no one was safe from being called in on a moment's notice. I went dry whenever I was in theater, since I was in the latter category. I had a few people get called in an say they were not fit to work on patients. They only did it once without some repercussions. The TV show MASH was bad fiction in this area.

The bigger issue I have is the binge drinker. In a safe environment taking the edge off is fine, blind drunk is not since too many people do stupid and injurious things in that state. I am seeing that daily where I am now. I am not the next Carrie Nation, but lack of moderation tends to annoy me.

I have today off, but am the on call doc for the rest of the week. No alcohol for me and I am good with it. I will be cleaning up after alcohol related incidents all weekend.

7. Better officers have been run off for much less

For those who missed it, the former SECNAV was trying to do a backdoor deal with the WH, bypassing SECDEF, to guarantee Gallagher would retire with his Trident. Green had to be part of that too.

Green was already fairly unpopular with the SEALs and the rest of SOF community. I expect him to exit on his own or by being relieved of command by the CNO or new SECNAV. Green is keenly aware of all of this. He chose to make this stand knowing the outcome. Be interesting to see what kind of doors are no longer open to him once he retires.
