Antimalarial drug touted by Trump is linked to increased risk of death in coronavirus patients, stud

A study of 96,000 hospitalized coronavirus patients on six continents found that those who received an antimalarial drug promoted by President Trump as a “game changer” in the fight against the virus had a significantly higher risk of death compared with those who did not.

People treated with hydroxychloroquine, or the closely related drug chloroquine, were also more likely to develop
a type of irregular heart rhythm, or arrhythmia, that can lead to sudden cardiac death, it concluded.

The study, published Friday in the medical journal the Lancet, is the largest analysis to date of the risks and benefits of treating covid-19 patients with antimalarial drugs. It is based on a retrospective analysis of medical records, not a controlled study in which patients are divided randomly into treatment groups — a method considered the gold standard of medicine. But the sheer size of the study was convincing to some scientists.

“It’s one thing not to have benefit, but this shows distinct harm,” said Eric Topol, a cardiologist and director of the Scripps Research Translational Institute. “If there was ever hope for this drug, this is the death of it.”

David Maron, director of preventive cardiology at the Stanford University School of Medicine, said that “these findings provide absolutely no reason for optimism that these drugs might be useful in the prevention or treatment of covid-19.”

Past studies also found scant or no evidence of hydroxychloroquine’s benefit in treating sick patients, while reports mounted of dangerous heart problems associated with its use. As a result, the Food and Drug Administration last month warned against the use of the drug outside hospital settings or clinical trials.

4. Large study finds hydroxychloroquine Covid-19 treatments linked to greater risk of death and heart a

Seriously ill Covid-19 patients who were treated with hydroxychloroquine and chloroquine were more likely to die or develop dangerous heart arrhythmias, according to a large observational study published Friday in the medical journal The Lancet.
Researchers analyzed data from more than 96,000 patients with confirmed Covid-19 from 671 hospitals. All were hospitalized from late December to mid-April, and had died or been discharged by April 21.
Just below 15,000 patients were treated with the antimalarial drugs hydroxychloroquine or chloroquine, or one of those drugs combined with an antibiotic.
All four of those treatments were linked with a higher risk of dying in the hospital. About 1 in 11 patients in the control group died in the hospital. About 1 in 6 patients treated with chloroquine or hydroxychloroquine alone died in the hospital. About 1 in 5 treated with chloroquine and an antibiotic died and almost 1 in 4 treated with hydroxychloroquine and an antibiotic died.
Researchers also found that serious cardiac arrhythmias were more common among patients receiving any of the four treatments. The largest increase was among the group treated with hydroxychloroquine and an antibiotic; 8% of those patients developed a heart arrhythmia, compared with 0.3% of patients in the control group.
“Previous small-scale studies have failed to identify robust evidence of a benefit and larger, randomised controlled trials are not yet completed,” study co-author Dr. Frank Ruschitzka, director of the Heart Center at University Hospital Zurich, said in a statement. “However, we now know from our study that the chance that these medications improve outcomes in COVID-19 is quite low.”

5. Linked means nothing,

there is a link between shark attacks and ice cream sales. Both increase because people go to the beach and eat ice cream when it is hot.

The UK NHS gives the drug to frontline medical people.

6. This isn't much of a study

as in double blind, placebo. It's a review of medical records. The biggest issue is they did not control for the patients condition.

In the words of the esteemed Dr. Fauci, it's anecdotal.

It's about as useful as the India study published a few days ago, regarding policemen who were given HCQ, and those who were not. More CV deaths in the not group.

8. Any study coming out of The Lancet is suspect at best.

Their sloppy vetting of published papers started the Anti-Vaccine movement. They spent almost twelve years defending the bad science behind it. They are to medical science what Paul Krugman is to economics. Publicly praised by all the "right" people while constantly being proved wrong.

18. US universities found to have received $6B in unreported investments/donations from

RUSSIA or China, a report said Friday.

The worry? These massive "investments of foreign money have bred dependency and distorted the decision making, mission, and values of too many institutions.” We've already seen many college 'educators' caught up in this coziness, especially with China.

What is it? 20 women complaining of Donnie's perverted assaults? Hard to keep track.

And flailing Donnie still says hydroxychloroquine is good for you. Don't you forget that!

19. Hillary Clinton: Trump 'needs to stop playing a doctor on TV'

Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton lambasted President Trump on Friday for promoting an anti-malaria drug as a treatment for COVID-19 that research has shown causes heart problems and death in patients.

"A study of 96,000 coronavirus patients found that those who received a drug Trump has promoted as a treatment had a 'significantly higher risk of death compared with those who did not,'" Clinton said in a tweet to her 27.8 million followers.

"The president needs to stop playing a doctor on TV."
