Aides knew of possible White House link to Cartagena, Colombia, prostitution scandal

As nearly two dozen Secret Service agents and members of the military were punished or fired following a 2012 prostitution scandal in Colombia, Obama administration officials repeatedly denied that anyone from the White House was involved.

But new details drawn from government documents and interviews show that senior White House aides were given information at the time suggesting that a prostitute was an overnight guest in the hotel room of a presidential advance-team member — yet that information was never thoroughly investigated or publicly acknowledged.
--
Former and current Secret Service agents said they are angry at the White House’s public insistence that none of its team members were involved and its private decision to not fully investigate one of its own — while their colleagues had their careers ruined or hampered.

Ten members of the Secret Service — ranging from younger, lower-level officers assigned to rope-line security to seasoned members of a counterassault team — lost their jobs because of their actions in Cartagena. The agents were told that they jeopardized national security by drinking excessively and having contact with foreign nationals.

They were treated “radically differently by different parts of the same executive branch,” said Larry Berger, a lawyer who represented many of the agents, who were union members of the Federal Law Enforcement Officers Association.

Wow...secret service does not sound happy. Worse looks like they were saving a donor's kid.

1. Has there ever been a more irresponsible or less accountable administration

in all of American history?

Survey says: Nope!

Worst. President. Ever.

3. "Iran Contra" was an attempt to arm freedom fighters against communist

oppression and tyranny in Central America; Iraq war was an successful attempt to drive Saddam Hussein from Kuwait, which he'd invaded illegally.

Your reply is FAIL.

4. Imagine a Democratic Prez

Selling missiles to a radical Islamic terrorist regime (Iran), and funding atrocities in Central America with the proceeds. And......doing it illegally in the first place....and lying to Congress about it secondly. Juxtaposing that with what the righties consider impeachable offenses nowadays.

This isn't exactly ancient history.

Talk about a FAIL?

13. FREE-DUMB FIGHTERS! Yeah, that's exactly what they were doing. Killing commies.

When I get done chuckling, I think I'll go get another cup of coffee.

P.S. Do you even have a clue as to who April Glaspie is?

12. Bad blood between the White House and Secret Service is not good.

I believe this is the same reporter who did the piece on how far the fence jumper got in the White House.

Looks like people are starting to talk. Is this a rebellion of some kind? There had been reports that the White House was displaying very controlling behavior trying to keep government employees from speaking.

The fascinating thing is how far the White House will go to stifle scandal and how they decide who is within the circle of protection and who is not.

14. That's a fair point.

Do you think other administrations turned a blind eye to SS shenanigans and kept themselves safer thereby?

What a scary thought that is.

15. What's scarier to me is I think the White House is almost solely focused on optics.

I wonder if the ISIS bombings are due to optics. I don't feel certain about what is a true goal and what is being done on a surface level for the purpose of polls. That's an unsettling idea.

Re: the IRS, I don't think the administration is that stupid to go after conservatives, but I do think they may have covered up Lois Lerner's bad behavior.

16. I don't know.

If they were truly only concerned about optics and polling, why do they never do the things that poll highest?

Raise taxes on the rich, stop and punish the outsourcing, repair and upgrade the infrastructure, universal health care...things that will actually help us.

I don't disagree about this ISIS nonsense, this is all a bunch of bullshit to keep the money flowing to the defense industry. And so easily done too.

In that case I believe they moved the polls to where they wanted using propaganda and then acted accordingly.

That's a real scandal that'll never be pursued, unlike the IRS goose chase.

17. They aren't proactive but reactive in their response.

That's Leon Panetta's complaint. They've checked out. They aren't thinking of what they can get done but what the must do to preserve what they have. Thus all is focused on 2014 elections and on putting out fires.

19. What's up with the Washington Post? They're starting to sound like News of the World

with these bullshit headlines.

The headline sounds like Obama called up Prostitutes R Us and ordered a few whores for his Men In Black.

In reality, people working for the TREASURY Department (because that is where Secret Service falls in the cabinet) and assigned to a protection detail at the WH were told about the misconduct of other people working for the Treasury Department...but hey, it's all about Obama and "The White House," because...?
