Why the Sudden Spate of Anti-Mormon News?

I've of course read the “Joseph Smith had 40 Wives” all over the internet. Then, when I turned on CNN, there was some professor from somewhere talking about the same “new”, declaring heretofore “secret documents” have been discovered about the subject.

And then while doing my morning news scan, I came across an article on BBC Online reporting about Mormon Magic Underwear and other outrageous beliefs by members of the church.

Nowhere was the full name of the church given – The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.

I had to ask myself – What's going on here? Why this all of a sudden?

It then hit me – it's all political!

The Left got it's butt tromped in the midterms and a number of conservative people were elected to Congress. The only way to regain their power is for liberals to do what they always do – viscously attack those who present a threat to them. They did it quite successfully to Governor Romney. Perhaps it will work against others.

They're already accusing black, conservative, Republican, MORMON Mia Love of being an Aunt Tomasa and a GOP Whore.

They're going after conservative blacks elected to office at all levels. Who dare they flout the party that has given them so much in the way of government handouts?

So what if Joseph Smith had 40 wives? Or a hundred? It was never any secret that Brigham Young had multiple wives.

Have you ever thought to look at their situation? They had been driven out of almost everywhere they had settled. Houses and businesses burned out. Many of them men killed, leaving more and more mothers struggling to care for their children. For that reason, THE WOMEN turned to men who showed an ability to provide for them. They weren't after an incestuous or titillating experience but security for them and their kids.

Polygamy has existed throughout history and is currently being observed in many countries all around the world? If that be the case, why the big deal about something that happened 170 years ago?

So, when you see or read all this garbage, remember – IT'S ALL POLITICAL!

3. Mormons

except their religion initiation story can't be told with a straight face to anyone not born and indoctrinated into the religion...

A most excellent tale to be sure, god needs someone to be aware of the reality of real christianity so he sends an angel into western New York in 1820 and directs some fringe fellow to dig up some golden plates and start his own church...a church where having multiple wives was part of the draw, oh and the only guy to actually have seen the plates and been able to translate them was Smith...but he did get 11 other guys to say they saw him so they could have multiple wives as well...of course he gave the plates back to the angel when he was done writing down their meanings.

Just admitting you are part of this church should disqualify you from any public office...

9. Agreed

They're all weird and ridiculous.

The interesting thing is that no politician who claimed to believe in the powers of Santa Claus would ever get elected, but we elect others who profess belief in a similar magical sky man without giving it any thought.

We once believed the earth was flat and one would fall off the edges if one wasn't careful. We blamed magic and demons for fevers.

We no longer believe such nonsense, but we hold in high esteem a great many adults who believe in the magical powers of a god who monitors Friday night football games and aids the members of the winning team.

31. Does that hold true

for the cults called BOG and HOF? I grew up in predominately LDS area and they were much more accepting of other views than either of those groups or the DUmp as a whole. You have to hold certain views and God help you if you stray from the playbook. So how are they any different than the religions you call cults.

Finally, how about that cult that follows Attera around relentlessly badgering her at every opportunity. I wonder who the leader of that cult is -- would you have any idea or care to denounce their behavior? Somehow I don't think so but one can Hope for a Change.

Isn't that special?

I live in LDS land too. Some are good people and some are assholes, just like any group. As a whole though, I find it difficult to distinguish any religion from cults. (and to take your silly question half seriously, of the two small internet website discussion groups you mentioned, the BoG would be closer to cult status than the HoF, but neither are really remotely such)

40. Members of cults

don't believe their precious little groups are cults. They think they are the only people that know the truth -- BOG and HOF do seem to fit.

Why do you and your little group badger Attera as much as you do? Is it a feeling of superiority or being in the popular kids group while belittling those from the outside or maybe your precious little gang are just flat out bullies?

I tend to think it's all three and the fact you can't see it says a lot about you and your fellow cultists.

I noticed that you didn't deny following Attera around for the purpose of badgering/belittling her at every chance -- yep bully it must be.

46. BWHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!

Me being a member of the DU BOG is way funnier than me being a member of HoF. At least my views on women's rights and concerns are more aligned with them than my views on the President are with the BOG.

Don't know if I have ever posted in the BOG. I have posted a few times in HoF, usually via the Latest page on DU. I observe how various people react to them, but my main posting is more trivial and unimportant. I use DU in a couple of ways. Primarily as a news source, second as community of Democrats and left-leaning fellow "travelers" that do not really exist near where I live and finally as a source of entertainment in the manner of the local coffee shop. I am not a great educator or writer so I tend to read a lot and learn. Way more than I contribute, I am afraid.

I am not a part of any group that badgers anyone. That poster irritates me on a personal level and anybody who took the time to look at her history here, but especially on DU, could figure out the truth. I fully admit I let her get to me occasionally and have had a few hides to show for it, but I am not part of any group that targets her. In fact about the only targeting would be her weird focus on HoF. She brings 99.999% of the feedback she gets on herself by her own behavior. Just because she has labeled me as HoF and just because a few from that group have argued with her in the past does not = HoF targeting her, nor even me being a HoFer. If you do a little looking you can see pretty clearly what goes on with her. I am not the only one she has labeled as a HoFer in various call-outs and tantrums. Until she got the paranoia about HoF, there were plenty of other regular DUers that reacted to her flame-bait and repeated GBCW posts in the same way. She just figured out that since so many demonize HoF they would be a great way to get even MORE attention than her "normal" outbursts. They barely even noticed her until she came here and really started ramping up the call-outs and blaming them for all of her problems. Demanding attention often gets results. She demands attention. She sometimes receives it.

Who is she at the DUmp? I have my suspicions but don't know for sure and she has been nothing but civil to me on DI and I afford her the same.

Except for 3-4 posters here I always try to stick up for the poster I feel is being piled on. Hell, I've stuck up for a couple of returning trolls when they were targeted. After they were proven to be trolls I felt like an idiot for being slow to realize they were in fact trolls but it is what it is.

I don't like to out people and didn't appreciate her doing it to me. Not that I am trying to be anybody different, but it was a chance to meet new people without preconceived notions. I knew I would be recognized by people from DU but I figured they would respect my choice like I did theirs.

LOL I hardly know anybody here who hasn't been really clear about who they are or that I finally started to recognize after several months, most I still don't know. Even the few true "friends" I have there! I don't ask, figuring they changed names for similar reasons as me.

I have defended people who have been picked on or otherwise were not popular (and who were eventually banned) and I have also seen some that just go out of their way to attract that kind of negative attention. I believe I am correct in this case.

15. Yes

All religions are fairy tales, it's just religion is a fairy tale that society has allowed supposedly intelligent adults to maintain. Whereas children's fairy tales must be dismissed upon reaching adulthood.

Pray the right way, believe the right thing and you get to live on forever....kill your infidel neighbors, shoot the abortion doctor in the head, wear a bomb to school, mutilate some women's genitalia, pass judgment on your neighbors, insert the words "under god" in the pledge in the 1950s and pretend they were there all along....all in the name of a fairy tale.

You're right mormons are no worse than any other religion and sadly, no better either.

61. Blame it on the Interwebs

The LDS leadership has put out the stories about Joseph Smith and the temple garments but it did so in reaction to chats all over the Internet which appear to be turning off big numbers of young LDS members. The phenomenon is happening all over the world and not just in religion but politics, childcare and a thousand other topics. Give millions of people sudden easy access to a shared experience and ...BOOM! The LDS leaders aren't having half as bad a time with the Internet as the ayatollahs in Iran or the generals in Egypt. It's the 21st century I guess.

Now back to your bigotry -- why is calling all Mormons equal to a stupid movie about a couple stupid (dumb) boneheads in a made up movie not a form of bigotry?

11. The Evangelicals don't think Mormons are real Christians.

They avoid saying that out loud. But that's their view.

This was shown clearly on CNN a couple years ago. Wolf asked Ralph Reed and James Carville that exact question. "Are Mormons real Christians?"

Carville said "Yes, its even in their name." And he provided the full name as you did above.

Ralph Reed however would not answer the question directly. He talked and talked, but never said "Yes", because he doesn't believe that they are.

But he didn't want to say it out loud.

Many of them feel the same about Catholics too ... see Reverend Jim Haggee for reference. McCain sought that nut job's endorsement, then had to run from it after Rev. Jim called the Pope an agent of the anti-Christ.

The left doesn't really care about anything but the politics these people support. The evangelicals on the right really care a great deal about this question.

16. As recent as 1978, Mia Love was considered to be a descendant of "angels who were too lazy......

.....to fight Satan"

This was seriously the Mormon theological explanation for where black folks came from. Some big argument happened up on the planet Kolob when Elohim asked his council of elders for their thoughts on creating this new planet called "Earth". Elohim's two eldest sons - Jesus and Lucifer - submitted bids, and Heavenly Daddy Elohim liked JC's proposal best, which got Lou all upset, so he got 1/3 of the angels to rebel with him, while another 1/3 sided with JC and Elohim. The remaining third didn't want to take sides and figured they would go with whomever won. (you could call them "centrists", maybe? or the KLC (Kolob Leadership Council)). So Elohim sent Lucifer and his loyalists down to Hell and kicked the lazy centrists out of Heaven, but not before turning them black.

Yeah, it sounds crazy, but blame Joseph Smith, not me......

85% of the stuff written about the Mormons is either complete fabrication or a serious distortion of what we believe.

35. Cool, yes, most are nice, in my experience.

Like every group, we have our jerks.

Just curious, what were the activities you couldn't participate in?

38. Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts

and the church basket ball league. Keep in mind this was 40+ years ago. It didn't bother me at all as I wasn't into clubs and such (preferred roaming the mountains, fishing and target shooting whenever I felt like it). My dad rented the school gym Sunday afternoons so that the Non-LDS kids could do their basket ball thing. Plus my uncles and father taught me more than I could have learned being in the Cub/Boy Scouts anyway.

50. 40 years ago. Things have probably changed some. I became LDS 26 years ago, in college.

"Church ball" is open to anyone. I had friends in high school who would play at the Mormon Church on their league.

Most LDS scout troops will gladly welcome in any non-LDS, so long as you're okay with a heavy emphasis on God and faith.

28. Your defense of this "alternative lifestyle" goes against everything your party stands for and has

legislated for (and against) for ever.

Guess PERVERTS are ok if they are conservative enough, and historiocal, but a present-day, monogamous relationship between two "they must be libs cause they're faggots" sends you and your party over the cliff of human behavior into murderous savagery.

55. And 99% of the posts are off topic.

Attack them for being different
Attack them for being family oriented
Attack them for not espousing the liberal agenda

Truly sad.
