Cyberjihad in France: 19,000 French websites hit

As many as 19,000 French websites have been "defaced" by hackers since the terror attacks there last week, in what some French news outlets are calling a "cyber jihad."

At least some of the attacks were carried out by known Islamic hacker groups, said Adm. Arnaud Coustilliere, head of cyberdefense for the French military.

"What's new, what's important, is that this is 19,000 sites — that's never been seen before," said Coustilliere. "This is the first time that a country has been faced with such a large wave" of cyberattacks," he said.

However computer security experts said such waves of attacks are actually common.

"I'd say it's fairly typical in terms of any geo-political conflict. You can pick any event around the world, whether it's an election or a sporting event, and there will be a wave of associated hacks," said Dan Holden, director of security research for Arbor Networks in Burlington, Mass.

"What this really is is the new normal, where you've got a reflection of the real world in the cyber realm," he said.

Many of the French websites were either knocked offline by so-called denial of service attacks or had their home pages replaced by Islamic flags or Islamist messages, Coustilliere said, in a report on the French news site 20 Min.

The sites that have been hit range from banks to media companies and, in one case, a gardening company, the Mirror newspaper in England reported.

Didn't "Anonymous" recently promise to take down every Jihadist website they could find? Maybe they should get cracking soon while France still has a presence in cyberspace.
