West Virginia Secretary of State Natalie Tennant wins Democratic primary for US Senate seat

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) — West Virginia Secretary of State Natalie Tennant has won the Democratic nomination for the U.S. Senate.

She defeated Dennis Melton and David B. Wamsley on Tuesday in the contest to replace Sen. Jay Rockefeller, who is retiring.

Her Republican opponent, U.S. Rep. Shelley Moore Capito, is favored to win the general election and currently has a 4-to-1 cash advantage.

Tennant spent 12 years as a television reporter in West Virginia and was the first woman to serve as West Virginia University's Mountaineer mascot.

1. I'm tracking that race, too.

With 58% of the vote counted, Democrat Tennant has 64,319 votes, and Republican Capito has 45,252 votes. I just can't see how that gives Capito the odds on winning the election. The cash I understand -- Capito's getting a lot of out-of-state funds from Rove- and Koch Brothers-related organizations.

2. This is the state primary election...

I understand the odds-makers, unfortunately... Capito has a HUGE coal-company and Koch funded war-chest, is a multi-term US House Rep (WV2), and the daughter of a former WV Governor (Arch Moore -- arguably the most corrupt one this state has ever had).

I think, however, that they are underestimating Tennant... She's been an excellent Secretary of State, and she is more personally-popular through the northern half of the state, where her name-recognition is gold... she was the first female Mountaineer mascot for West Virginia University!
