Are We Going To Freak Out Every Time Trump Does What He Promised?

Politics: Three months ago, Candidate Trump promised that on Day One of his presidency he would, if elected, "suspend immigration from terror-prone regions where vetting cannot safely occur." President Trump didn't get around to that until Day Seven, which means he was a week late. Yet everyone is acting as if this all came out of the blue.

The exutive order Trump signed Friday afternoon instituted a 90-day suspension of immigrants from countries listed by the Obama administration as having a significant foreign terrorist organization presence. The reason is to give relevant agencies the breathing room to review their procedures and make sure that "adequate standards are established to prevent infiltration by foreign terrorists or criminals."

The order also suspends the U.S. Refugee Admissions Program for 120 days, giving Homeland Security and the Director of National Intelligence time to "determine what additional procedures should be taken" to make sure that terrorists aren't slipping in under the guise of refugees — a legitimate concern. It also sets a slightly lower 50,000 cap on refugees for this year than has been in effect over the past decade.

Trump's actions should not have come as a surprise to anyone who was paying even the slightest attention to the presidential campaign.

Before issuing his Contract With The American Voter in October — in which he listed in detail his plans for his first days in office — Trump regularly promised on the campaign trail to suspend immigration from terror-prone countries, as he did in June when he said he would suspend immigration from countries "where there is a proven history of terrorism against the United States, Europe or our allies until we fully understand how to end these threats." Trump has promised, too, to halt Syrian refugees, given that ISIS had specifically targeted refugee populations as ways to infiltrate the West.

Obama once even mocked Trump for this, saying last spring that Trump's travel suspension "doesn't reflect our democratic ideals."

Nor is what Trump has done particularly unusual, let alone extreme.

The countries involved in the 90-day suspension — Iran, Iraq, Syria, Libya, Somalia, Sudan and Yemen — weren't named in Trump's executive order. They were listed by the Obama administration as countries of special concern under a 2015 law that requires anyone who even visited one of these terror-prone countries to undergo special scrutiny before coming to the U.S. — even if they hail from a country that otherwise doesn't require a visa to visit the U.S.

President Obama himself barred large groups of immigrants from entering the U.S. at least six times out of national security concerns, according to a review last June by the Washington Examiner. In 2011, the administration suspended refugee processing from Iraq for six months to make sure terrorists weren't exploiting the program.

The Examiner also found that "President Bill Clinton issued six immigrant bans; George W. Bush six immigrant bans; and former President Ronald Reagan four. And in 1980, former President Jimmy Carter banned Iranians after Tehran seized the U.S. embassy."

1. not letting up...not ever. It's entitled "resist" for a reason.

Trump had better get used to it.

Perhaps he'll finally grow more presidential when faced with all this opposition..fwiw, I don't think that is very likely

27. Going to be a Cold Winter protesting on only tofu breakfasts outside Trump Tower

The Opposition isnt as organized as the Occutards were.

You protested trumps Grab them by the Pussy, yet you all love a man who stuck cigars inside a interns Vagina just shows the levels of hypocrisy of the protestors.

LW goes berserk over temporary bans on certain immigrants

Yet pretends Jimmy Carter's ban on Iranian students in 1979 and Obama's on Iraqis in 2011 were completely different

Again shows no real principles on the LW part, just tantrums because he is your president

Just as the LW blanket defended BLM and Michael Brown facts dont matter, only blind stupidity.

17. I have to give you this one

You did not state that Hillary won a majority. You stated a majority rejected Trump. That takes a bit of conjecture on your part but what you said cannot be disputed without polling what the 3rd party voters views were on Trump's policies.

22. If the 3rd party voters wanted Trump policies, we would have voted for Trump.

I believe it's safe to bet that 99% of 3rd party voters rejected Trump. You may call that conjecture. I call it common sense.

26. You can call it whatever you want

That doesn't change the fact that without some form of polling you are basing your opinion on nothing more than anecdotal evidence. In the end, that is nothing more than conjecture.

... out of a total of 137 million.

That means 54% of the votes cast were for someone other than Trump.

The majority of Ameican voters rejected him and his policies.

16. A big problem is the ham-fisted nature of it

Any way you slice it, this EO was a clusterfuck. Entire departments didn't know what was going on. Agents weren't sure how to go about implementing the regulations or even who was covered.

Let's start on a point of agreement. Refugees and immigrants from terror-prone nations (as identified by the Obama administration) should fall under special, rigorous scrutiny. If Trump wants the agencies to have a few months to ensure the screening processes are effective and thorough, I'm totally fine with that.

Here's where the clusterfuck comes in. Green card holders? Doctors and scientists who are permanent residents? People who have built entire lives here and lived here for many years? People who have already had their lives picked apart by immigration agencies?

They should have never been caught up in this. It was an embarrassment, to the country and to the administration. It made us look absolutely terrible on the world stage. If you wanted people to say Trump is an authoritarian racist, he could have hardly crafted an EO more suited to the charge.

It was entirely possible to implement additional screening measures and departmental review without the complete fuckfest that resulted.

I'm absolutely for additional screening of, say, Syrian refugees. I think we should know who's coming into this country, and I do think we should limit numbers. Look at Europe, see how well western values are being tested by waves of unchecked immigration. Merkel nearly committed political suicide with that bit. She's not exactly in a position to lecture anyone.

But this EO was so sloppy, so damaging, and so demeaning to some of our best immigrants, it was wholly unacceptable. It was pure amateur hour. This administration needs to get its shit together already.

The media are absolutely gunning for Trump, and he played right into their caricature of him. Sloppy, disorganized, unprofessional, careless, and inconsiderate of the damage blanket policies and EOs can do if signed without proper vetting and review.

I hope they learn from this. We can't have an executive run in this manner.

Trump needs to run his government well.

And that's not media and elites. They'll bitch about whatever. But this was Grade A Retarded on the part of his administration.

19. This is the first time I can remember when a politician

actually did what was promised to get elected.

Usually, they promise everything and actually deliver nothing they promised.

Trump has done more in a week than the past 3 presidents combined years of nothingness.

People are freaking out because it wasn't expected to be delivered what was promised.
