Is it good foreign policy to protect Germany from Russia with $$ while the Germans DEAL with Russia?

Imagine the shot in the arm to the US economy if the money our Servicemen and Women are paid were spent here in the states instead of in the German economy.

Imagine how much the DoD would save on moving people and materiel from here to there and back.

Should we close our bases in Germany?

1. NATO is obsolete

According to some Brit politician or general (can't remember) the purpose of NATO is to "Keep the Americans in, the Russians out and the Germans down".

Well, that ship has sailed.

2. As a lifelong professional civilian, I am no expert on things military

but I recall there was much concern about the losses of the Subic Bay naval base and the Clark air force base in the Philippines during the late 1980s, which meant that a lot of our stuff had to be stashed on Guam, not nearly so strategically placed, geographically.

But unless there's something I'm not seeing, the loss of those bases didn't add up to squat, due to the changing technology of waging war, which now can be waged, almost, simply by remote control.
