1. Wouldn't this list be dependent upon what you are studying?

4. Heres what they say

The Times Higher Education World University Rankings are the only global performance tables that judge research-intensive universities across all their core missions: teaching, research, knowledge transfer and international outlook. We use 13 carefully calibrated performance indicators to provide the most comprehensive and balanced comparisons, trusted by students, academics, university leaders, industry and governments.

The performance indicators are grouped into five areas: teaching (the learning environment); research (volume, income and reputation); citations (research influence); international outlook (staff, students and research); and industry income (knowledge transfer).

5. Yes, but I think this is sort of aggregating all the degrees

That are offered. If the category was best school for engineering, law, med, or gender studies, I’m sure those lists would all be different.

6. That was kind of my point. You sure as hell wouldn't got to MIT to study English Lit., for example.

9. Maybe you wouldnt

But enough people do that MIT has a School of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences with majors in Anthropology; Comparative Media Studies/Writing; Computer Science, Economics, and Data Science; Economics; Global Studies and Languages; History, Humanities; Linguistics and Philosophy; Literature; Music and Theater Arts; Political Science; Science, Technology, and Society; and Statistics and Humanities.

10. Very much so

For example, UC Berkeley has an outstanding program and reputation for astrophysics. Astrophysics and cosmology are serious side interests for me, so I've gotten to know the professors in the department there over the years. A few of them let me sit in on lectures when I have the time.

It's good for STEM in general, honestly. That's why there's a massive influx of foreign students, particularly from China.

Their social sciences . . . eh. Nothing to write home about. The usual regressive hooey. No one's impressed by a liberal arts degree from Berkeley. They're usually a little bit frightened, because they know the crazy is lurking.

2. Stanford and UCLA are too high, Penn and Johns Hopkins are too low.

MIT and Caltech are the two best schools in America.

8. Depends on what you are studying.....

Not a single one of these is best for Agricultural Engineering for example.

3. My alma mater's on there!

Interesting ranking...but a Brit list is inevitably gonna be Brit-centric. It's kinda like the BBC's sports news that way.
