How Russia Sows Confusion in the U.S. Vaccine Debate

How Russia Sows Confusion in the U.S. Vaccine Debate
Not content to cause political problems, Moscow’s trolls are also undermining public health.

In recent weeks, public health officials and state legislators have scrambled to combat new cases of measles across the United States. By April 4, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention had already reported 465 cases of the disease, more than the total for all of 2018.

Measles is concerning in its own right. Aside from the discomfort it causes, in 25 percent of cases people who get measles are hospitalized. But an overlooked detail adds another layer to the threat. In the United States, measles has a surprising booster: Russian trolls and bots.

The existence of a Russian disinformation campaign that could make Americans hesitant to vaccinate their children highlights something important about the Kremlin’s information war on the United States. Moscow’s goal has never been to advantage Republicans or Democrats. Instead, it is after a far bigger prize: the exacerbation of Americans’ distrust of one another and, in turn, the erosion of their confidence in society and the U.S. government.

A recent study from David Broniatowski, a professor at George Washington University, and his co-authors found that thousands of Russian accounts used to spread disinformation had seized on anti-vaccine messaging.

2. TRY at least once to tell the truth

April 15, 2019

The number of new measles cases in the United States rose again this month, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said on Monday, bringing the total number to 555 in 2019. This year’s outbreak is on course to be the worst since the country eliminated measles as an endemic disease in 2000.

Health authorities reported 90 additional cases as of April 11, with outbreaks in New York, Washington, California, New Jersey and Michigan, up from 78 the week before. Those cases were largely linked to travelers returning from countries seeing outbreaks of their own, including Israel, Ukraine and the Philippines.

We get it you dont like jews and in your mind they are to blame for all the worlds evils

Many countries are having outbreaks bigger than Israel’s. Madagascar has seen 66,000 cases of measles, with more than 900 dead. India has had 63,000 cases; Pakistan, 31,000; Yemen, 12,000; Brazil, 10,000; and Venezuela, 5,700.

Most of these countries have chronically low vaccination rates. But some are worsened by unique constellations of challenges.

Yemen is in the middle of a civil war. Venezuela’s medical system has broken down; part of Brazil’s outbreak is in refugees from Venezuela.

Madagascar is one of the world’s poorest countries. It is an island with a high birthrate, and there had been no measles outbreak since 2003, so it had a huge pool of susceptible children and teenagers. And many of those children are dangerously malnourished.

5. That's not even the point.

The point is, Russia is helping to spread the antivax insanity in the US.

While it is true that NYC Jewish community outbreak was brought on by travelers who had been in Israel, the virus has also been brought into the US by people who have traveled to other places where there is an outbreak, such as parts of Europe, Africa, Asia, and the Pacific. So you can't just blame this on Jews, if that's where you're coming from.

The outbreak of measles in the US is due largely to inadequate vaccination rates in some communities. And without a doubt Russia is helping spread misinformation here about vaccines.

6. Yet the Trump Party has effectively chosen to ally itself with Russia

It's a fairly shocking spectacle to behold. Who would ever have thought that a major US political party, the Republican/Trump Party, would effectively embrace and encourage an enemy country? It completely amazes me that Republican Party members (and those who vote with them) think nothing of the fact that their leader gleefully accepted Russian help to turn an election in their favor.

Disappointing. It's rank disloyalty. It's a really disgusting display of the betrayal of their citizenship.

8. Lets examine that lie of yours, shall we?

Something Obama was never game to do. Trump did.

The prospect of Russians and US troops colliding was long feared in the Cold War days, because it might result in a nuclear response. When that fearful outcome happened last year in Syria. Crickets...

The closest the world ever came to nuclear war was in 1962 when the USSR deployed IRBM's to Cuba. The question was settled when the Soviets withdrew their IRBM's and the USA secretly withdrew theirs from Turkey.

The Russian's can moan all they like today, about the current asymmetry of Western anti ballistic missile defence, in the same sense that they tried to lodge IRBM's in Cuba in 1962, to even up that ledger.

It does them no good.

Trump just does it anyway.

He's put ABM into Lithuania and into Poland at one site. The next planned site will become operational soon and gloriously the Poles want to name it 'Fort Trump'.

Yeah for sure. Fort Trump! How good is that? He doesn't even have to die before he gets an Aircraft Carrier named after him! He will have his own fort. There's a lot of love for the Trumpster in Poland, Lithuania and the Ukraine - The frontline States.

9. It's a fact. The Trump Party accepted and encouraged Russian aggression against the US.

Your OP is yet another example of Russian aggression that continues to this day. Yet the Republican Party continues to turn a blind eye to it merely because they want further Russian support in US elections. To a very large degree that makes the Republican/Trump Party a fifth column. It's no lie.

Sorry, but the Republican Party has fallen into disgrace. I'm far from the only one who knows it. Republicans with a trace of integrity know it too. Lots of them have taken the exit from the Republican/Trump Party to preserve their integrity.
