Samuel Clemens gets it.

“Suppose you were an idiot. And suppose you were a member of Congress. But I repeat myself.”

“Fleas can be taught nearly anything that a Congressman can.”

“An honest man in politics shines more there than he would elsewhere.”

“There is no distinctly native American criminal class except Congress.”

“All Congresses and Parliaments have a kindly feeling for idiots, and a compassion for them, on account of personal experience and heredity.”

2. And yet

Half the country wants to give Congress more control over the people, so it can take care of and provide for them.

4. Reality

Health care, no knock warrants, retirement, welfare, what we eat, etc... etc... etc..., Americans give up control, or are forced to give up control, so that government will provide for them. Government that Clemens says is ran by idiots.

I don't know about you, but I don't like to give idiots power and control over my life.

5. Ah ...changed your tune now?

Half the country wants to give congress more control over the people Where did you get that whacked out idea from? What "half" of the country are you talking about? Who is it that is trying to give congress more control than it already has? Define that "control" you mention.

6. No, same tune

The left half of the country votes to give those idiots in Congress more control and power over the people. It is what leftist ideology is based on.

Our excessive and oppressive taxation gives those idiots in Congress more control over us. It puts us at their mercy, where we are afraid to seriously question out of fear of losing material things government provides.
Government mandates that control how an individual behaves, believes and supports, is having control over the individual.
Government mandates that control what a business offers and how it runs it's business, is control.

You being apathetic to such things does not mean it hasn't happened, or continues to happen on a daily basis.

12. So the leftists don't want government

To provide universal health care?
To force people to financially support things against their will and/or religious beliefs?
To dictate where one can and cannot exercise their religious freedom?
To dictate what a private business will offer its customers? What it pays its employees?
To dictate and control what people eat and drink?
To dictate what people do in the privacy of their own homes?
To forcefully take more from one in order to give to another?

Those aren't "whacked out ideas," they are daily headlines.

13. Floating constitutional congressional control is what is whacked out.

Unless it is amended congressional control dictated by the constitution is not up for a vote.

14. Which is why leftists have to do an 'end around' to get their policies passed into law.

Why mess with giving Congress more control through a vote, when you can just reinterpret what the Constitution means.

15. You misunderstand...

I think congress should be held to their enumerated powers. They have surpassed their constitutional powers for years now.

16. While I may agree with that ...it is not the common people who change constitutional powers.

It may be that the wording the original poster used that started this bullshit storm was incorrect.

18. Our congress...

has grown out of control in terms of power. I am not particularly interested in party squabbles I think they are both full of shit. Unfortunately, I see nop evidence that says that congress or any other branch will recoil back to the founding vision of this country and that is why the incrementalism used by both parties has to stop.

19. What you call "out of control in terms of power" I call abuse of existing power.

Obstruction ...filibuster ...consistent anti Obama agendas ...instead of working for and in the "common" persons interests.

22. Look at...

Reserved powers and delegated powers and see where congress has overstepped. Healthcare and education are both priorities of the state, not the federal system.

9. Mark Twain Is a National Treasure

We all heard about stagecoaches crossing the West. Clemens described what it was like to be a passenger in one (spoiler: hot and uncomfortable). He had the gift of describing life as it was and making it interesting. You will learn more about America in the 1800s from his writing than any boring history book.

Here's a shout out to Lazarus Long. Yeah, I noticed your avatar. I like it.

17. Will Rogers got it, too.

"When Congress makes a joke it's a law, and when they make a law, it's a joke."

"Never blame a legislative body for not doing something. When they do nothing, they don't hurt anybody. When they do something is when they become dangerous."

"About all I can say for the United States Senate is that it opens with a prayer and closes with an investigation."

20. "KILL EVERYONE OVER TEN"

General Jacob H. Smith's infamous order "KILL EVERYONE OVER TEN" was the caption in the New York Journal cartoon on May 5, 1902. The Old Glory draped an American shield on which a vulture replaced the bald eagle. The bottom caption exclaimed, "Criminals Because They Were Born Ten Years Before We Took the Philippines."

In November 1901, the Manila correspondent of the Philadelphia Ledger reported:

“The present war is no bloodless, opera bouffe engagement; our men have been relentless, have killed to exterminate men, women, children, prisoners and captives, active insurgents and suspected people from lads of ten up, the idea prevailing that the Filipino as such was little better than a dog...

“Our soldiers have pumped salt water into men to make them talk, and have taken prisoners people who held up their hands and peacefully surrendered, and an hour later, without an atom of evidence to show that they were even insurrectos, stood them on a bridge and shot them down one by one, to drop into the water below and float down, as examples to those who found their bullet-loaded corpses.”

In the province of Batangas, the secretary of the province estimated that of the population of 300,000, one third had been killed by combat, famine, or disease.

American firepower was overwhelmingly superior to anything the Filipino rebels could put together. In the very first battle, Admiral Dewey steamed up the Pasig River and fired 500-pound shells into the Filipino trenches. Dead Filipinos were piled so high that the Americans used their bodies for breastworks.

A British witness said:

“This is not war; it is simply massacre and murderous butchery.”

Mark Twain October 15, 1900:

“...I have seen that we do not intend to free, but to subjugate the people of the Philippines. We have gone to conquer, not to redeem... And so I am an anti-imperialist. I am opposed to having the eagle put its talons on any other land.”

21. Truth from Twain...

"When all the bricklayers, and all the machinists, and all the miners, and blacksmiths, and printers, and hod-carriers, and stevedores, and house-painters, and brakemen, and engineers, and conductors, and factory hands, and horse-car drivers, and all the shop-girls, and all the sewing-women, and all the telegraph operators; in a word all the myriads of toilers in whom is slumbering the reality of that thing which you call Power ... when these rise, call the vast spectacle by any deluding name that will please your ear, but the fact remains a Nation has risen."

Mark Twain
