Illinois Cancels Country Rock Band 'Confederate Railroad' from Fair Lineup Over Confederate Flag

By JOHN O'CONNOR

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) — Country rock band Confederate Railroad has been barred from performing at an Illinois state fair because of its use of the Confederate flag, setting off a firestorm by southern Illinois fans who believe they’re under Chicago liberals’ thumb of political correctness.

The band was scheduled to appear Aug. 27 at the DuQuoin State Fair , but Gov. J.B. Pritzker’s administration canceled the appearance last week.

“This administration’s guiding principle is that the state of Illinois will not use state resources to promote symbols of racism,” Pritzker spokeswoman Emily Bittner said. “Symbols of hate cannot and will not represent the values of the Land of Lincoln.”

The logo for the Grammy-nominated band, known for acoustic ballads such as “Jesus and Mama” as well as its raucous anthem, “Trashy Women,” features a steam engine from which waves dual Confederate Navy Jacks, whose stars and bars are the most widely recognized symbol of the Confederacy.

The banner has been attacked in recent years as a racist emblem of slavery and segregation. Supporters say it represents history and southern heritage.

The flare-up in DuQuoin, 87 miles (140 kilometers) southeast of St. Louis, rekindles a centuries-old rift in Illinois, whose southern tip reaches far into the confines of the old Confederacy and is home to a more traditional and conservative culture than that represented by Chicago Democrat Pritzker. Routinely, the region spawns legislation to make Chicago a separate state.

Joe McKinney, who has contacted Confederate Railroad about performing at his family’s banquet facility in DeSoto because of the group’s popularity, said the band has never used the flag to fan racial strife. “It’s just their logo. It’s just their southern pride,” McKinney said. But McKinney’s attempt to land the band goes beyond symbolism.

There’s nothing wrong with the word Confederate

It’s the same as Republic or Democracy

The Articles of Confederation were the interim Constitution of the 13 Colonies before the present Constitution was written

These Backwards morons don’t know what they’re talking about

The USS Confederacy was a Ship of the CONTINENTAL Navy during the Revolutionary War!

Also, there is no more a such thing as 'country rock' than there is a such thing as 'chocolate vanilla' or 'hot cold'.

Even alabama wasn't rock, even though it was rock-ish.

Thats hank jr, and thats country lol.

Granted, I don't listen to country music, paricularly modern country, it seems more "popish" than "rockish" from what I have heard of it.

When I think of rock, I think of guitar that is everything country music guitar isn't, from Chuch Berry. to journey to slayer

50. "Well...moving towards rock doesn't make it rock."

On that I certainly agree. BUT many of the newer groups

have pushed away from country, even though they call themselves country.

See: Kenny Chesney, Toby Keith, Florida Georgia Line, Little Big Town,

Garth Brooks, Brad Paisley... music I actually enjoy listening to... and I hate country.

This was country to me.

You find them played on country stations, and don't find them played on rock stations.

Like you, I can't stand thast old stuff, but the amount overall that I find tolerable could maybe fill an lp, when it comes to country music overall.

Give me something metal any day.

So now you are changing it to "old country".

I disagree again. those groups I named and others are only "country" in that they

are still invited to the Country Music Awards.

There is VERY little difference between country stations and rock stations these days.

And as far as Metal... I could listen to stuff like Black Sabbath, mainly for the guitar riffs.

54. You made the distinction between the two of them.

"Hank Williams is country... Hank Williams Jr. is not."

I simply applied the term 'old' to hank sr and his country, because it doesn't fit hank jr and his newer country.

Hank even says he is a country singer himself, at the beginning of 'family tradition':

"Country music singers, always been a real close family, but lately some of my kinfolk, have disowned a few others and me"

"I am very proud, Of my daddys name, Even though his kind of music, and mine ain't exactly the same"

It isn't Seniors old country music, but it is most definitely country music.

"I disagree again. those groups I named and others are only "country" in that they are still invited to the Country Music Awards."

Invited to the country music awards. Played on country stations. Found in the country music heading on the internet far and wide, in used CD stores, and in retail locations that still sell music if there are any still around.

"Kenny Chesney, Toby Keith, Florida Georgia Line, Little Big Town, Garth Brooks, Brad Paisley"

All of the above are country.

You wont find them getting any rock music awards, or played on rock stations, or found under the rock music heading on the internet or in used CD stores or in retail locations that still sell music if there are any still around.

"There is VERY little difference between country stations and rock stations these days. "

Really? Are country music stations playing the syndicated Dee Sniders House of Hair now, or doing Nights with Alice Cooper, or Floydian Slip, Or Mandatory Metallica, or Full Metal Jackie, or...

I think when you say "Rock station", you mean something different than I think when I hear the phrase.

Rock stations, at least where I live and travel, don't do pop like prince or michael jackson or even hall and oates. I can see where country, some of the newer stuff, might begin to approach those, but none of those you named are like that. Garth brooks is plain old crying in ones beer country music, just newer than the rest.

Thunder rolls...Friends in low places...I heard all his stuff from that era when it was new...I had some friends that went apeshit over it when he became big. Its country, with rock elements added to it for extra zip.

Whether its bad or good, thats individual taste, subjective.

Whether its rock or country music, that isn't.

55. . "Its country, with rock elements added to it for extra zip."

Thus my argument. It really isn't pure country anymore... there's a lot of rock in it.

"I simply applied the term 'old' to hank sr and his country, because it doesn't fit hank jr and his newer country."

Using your own words... . "Its country, with rock elements added to it for extra zip."

BTW Hank JR recorded Family Tradition 40 years ago (1979)... A lot has changed... including falling 440 feet

down the side of a mountain in Montana four years earlier (1975)

I'm done... country is as much rock as it is country anymore.

Carry on.

Which makes me question this constantly over-evolving of definitions.

https://ultimateclassicrock.com/tags/top-100-classic-rock-songs/

Me personally, I'd never indlude them as "classic rock" (thats insulting for a metal band lol)...I tend to define that in a way that discludes metal.

60. This.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Classic_rock

Pay particular interest to this.

The classic rock format evolved from AOR radio stations that were attempting to appeal to an older audience by including familiar songs of the past with current hits. In 1980, AOR radio station M105 in Cleveland began billing itself as "Cleveland's Classic Rock", playing a mix of rock music from the mid-1960s to the present. Similarly, WMET called itself "Chicago's Classic Rock" in 1981. In 1982, radio consultant Lee Abrams developed the "Timeless Rock" format which combined contemporary AOR with rock hits from the 1960s and 1970s.

I'm done.

Yeah, I find flying such flags to be a bit tasteless...but so is my sense of humor. I've little room to talk...

Never-ending dust-ups over essentially unimportant matters like this one are one reason we make so little progress on issues of substance. Two sides playing "gotcha" games and fueling the perpetual outrage machine. THAT'S what "political discourse" looks like in today's America...as we keep spinning 'round the bowl. Meme'ing while Rome burns...
