Yahoo fined $250k daily for non-compliance to NSA demands

Yahoo $250,000 daily fine over NSA data refusal was set to double 'every week'

Company releases 1,500 documents from failed suit against NSA over user data requests and cooperation with Prism compliance

The US government threatened to fine Yahoo $250,000 a day if it refused to hand over user data to the National Security Agency, according to court documents unsealed on Thursday.

In a blogpost, the company said the 1,500 pages of once-secret documents shine further light on Yahoo’s previously disclosed clash with the NSA over access to its users’ data. The size of the daily fine was set to double every week that Yahoo refused to comply, the documents show.

I regret ever voting for this disgrace. The Obama regime will go down as ushering in the beginnings of modern-day fascism.

2. That's because they're fucking delusional

The saddest thing about this whole mess was watching fellow opponents of Bush do a 180 once Obama took office.

I'm coming to the realization that politics is a waste of time. No matter who we elect, he/she will be worse than the last one. Throw them a bone on gay marriage and some women's issue, and Democrats become docile. It's sickening. Hell, they give him credit every week he doesn't start a war. And when he does, they claim it's better than Bush's wars.

Sad. This whole thing is crumbling.

4. I think its sad that you think this.

I don't see it, and don't think I ever have. Liberals are very upset about this, just like we were at Bush. Now that you conservatives are with us, the least you could do is say your sorry for doubting us so much.

Another case of us being right that you seem incapable of accepting.

8. Yeah, that's why we voted for Obama.

Because Romney would do the same thing.

And yes, everything Obama does is vigorously defended on DU. Glenn Greenwald is HATED and maligned on DU for having the audacity to criticize a Democratic president.

12. If Dems have influence on something that is such a violation, USE IT.

If your just the victim of a President you voted for, who will do what ever he wants, including escalating former polices that were bad (hope and change), and you do nothing, You have lost street cred on being a party of principles

10. Fair enough.

And as I said, I don't give a "pass" to Obama on this. I don't see many that do.

7. Not quite...

I regret ever voting for this disgrace. The Obama regime will go down as ushering in the beginnings of modern-day fascism.

Although the beginnings of fascism (corporate control of the Govt.) had their germination in the Ford Administration (with Rumsefeld and Cheney), took off with Reagan, nurtured under Clinton, and put on Steroids with GWBush, Obama has continued The policies of fostering plutocracy and despotism, at the behest of the oligarchy.

15. DO ANY OF YOU IDIOTS NOTE THE DATE?

“The released documents underscore how we had to fight every step of the way to challenge the US government’s surveillance efforts,” said the company’s general counsel, Ron Bell, in a Tumblr post.

The US government amended a key law to demand user information from online services in 2007. When Yahoo was asked to hand over user data the company objected arguing the request was “unconstitutional and overbroad”.

Disclosures in the Guardian and the Washington Post about the Prism programme, which was discontinued in 2011, prompted an international backlash over allegations of overreach in government surveillance and against the tech companies which cooperated with it.
...
“Our fight continues. We are still pushing for the FISC to release materials from the 2007-2008 case in the lower court. The FISC indicated previously that it was waiting on the FISC-R ruling in relation to the 2008 appeal before moving forward. Now that the FISC-R matter is resolved, we will work hard to make the materials from the FISC case public, as well.”This is Yahoo talking about a court case in 2007 and 2008. Do any of you happen to remember who was President then?

And yet, the idiot Green-Socialist Trolls agree with the idiot GOP Trolls that this was all, somehow, all Obama's fault. Even though he ended the program in 2011.

*sigh* I wonder if they have even the slightest inkling of how much of an embarrassment they are to themselves. Likely not.
