New Zealand gun buyback
Since the mass shootings at Christchurch mosques that killed 51 people, New Zealand’s government has purchased more than 10,000 firearms as part of a buyback program. The government there, by a vote of 119-1, outlawed most automatic and semiautomatic weapons and set aside NZ$150 million to buy the guns that are now illegal.

1. A mere fraction and they are not paying anywhere near market value
Look at the math in the US. 400-500 million firearms. $1K each. That is before the cost of setting up and administering the program, which could nearly double the cost.
You ready to pay that amount? |

5. I'm not sure that talking about market value makes much sense in this case.
They have already passed the law making it illegal to own or sell one of these firearms.
Since you can't sell it, the (legal) market value is zero. All (legal) gun owners have to register their firearms, so the government already knows if you have a newly illegal firearm or not. They have little choice other than to turn it over and take whatever the government gives them for it, or break the law. |

6. US law requires compensation for property seized at the market rate before the seizure occured
In this case they declared a top line and set prices well below prior market value.

7. I agree with your posts but they stop a few questions short of any kind of an end result.
The left thinks it is just as easy as passing some new laws.
It isn't. They left must know that there are a lot of firearms owners out there who have never broken the current firearms laws but who will never willingly give up their guns. To put it bluntly, these currently law abiding citizens are willing to kill and die to maintain their 2A constitutional rights. There are many, many, citizens who are now and will be willing to die to protect their constitutional rights. SO, The pertinent question is and has been, How many on the left are willing to die for their political ideals that include depriving good citizens of their constitutional rights? So, lefty, step right on up and be counted as willing to die for your ideals and beliefs. |

8. One additional note
Unlike the Lefty wishful view of gun owners ... most are not overweight slobs, living in Mom's basement (projection?)
Many of those gun owners are former military and know how to use the weapons they trained on and that many of us fought with. I let a WW II Veteran use my Garand at the range earlier last summer. Hadn't touched one since 1946. In 3 or 4 shots he was smiling and reloading new clips like riding a bicycle. I have no doubt he and many others like him would be "less than enthusiastic" about some government weasel demanding his personal property. |

9. Good points. The left loves to believe their own lies about gun owners.
Well over a hundred million gun owners in our nation have never committed a dangerous or illegal act with their firearms. Not one of their firearms have killed as many people as ted kenndys car did.

21. I'm not arguing in favor of what they are doing.
Just pointing out the way they did it, they destroyed the market value first - then offered a buyback.

14. Making something property illegal...
...then giving a pitiable amount for it is unconditional in the USA. And the owners in NZ could just hide some of their guns off property and say they were stolen the day before when they come to confiscate them. How will the government probe them wrong? Innocent until proven guilty.

22. Sure. The point I was responding to was the below market value payment given.
Sure, someone could hide the firearms and lie about it. However that will make them a criminal - perhaps unproven, but a criminal none the less.

28. In America...
...if the government offers $200 for $1,000 guns or zero after a period of time, most won’t turn them in and then there will be a lot of dead cops and gun owners when the shoot outs begin over confiscation.
And a lot of sanctuaries, as red states will follow the blue state idea of ignoring laws they don’t like and legalize those guns in their state and refuse to allow cops to enforce it. |

I know, it was only 6 years ago, but those of us who own guns and believe in the provisions of the 2nd Amendment know that we've only grown in strength

17. There are just a few more than that.
“Nearly 300,000 licensed firearm owners own and use New Zealand's estimated 1.5 million firearms. Gun licenses are issued at the discretion of the police provided they consider the person to be of good standing, and without criminal, psychiatric or drug issues; as well as meeting other conditions such as having suitable storage facilities. Several different categories of license are permitted, with the most common, "A Category", permitting access to sporting configuration rifles and shotguns.”
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gun_laws_in_New_Zealand#Arms_Amendment_Bills_2_and_3_(1999_to_2012) New Zealand has same the population as the Phoenix, Arizona metropolitan area. |

New Zealand never owned the guns to “buy them back”.
But “Buyback” sounds better than “take what we give you and shut up” peasant. |

27. They're not too fond of the 1st either
They've made it very clear that they consider any speech that they don't like as "Hate speech" and want to shut it down ASAP.
Plus, they want to declare the NRA and any other groups they disapprove of as "Terrorists". If Hillary would have gotten in, we'd already have two more RBGs on SCOTUS to rule that way. |
