"Trump says he delayed tariffs because of concerns over Christmas shopping season"
“We’re doing this for the Christmas season,” Trump told reporters on an airport tarmac around noon Tuesday. “Just in case some of the tariffs would have an impact on U.S. customers.”
“So far they’ve had virtually none,” the president added. “But just in case they might have an impact on people, what we’ve done is we’ve delayed it, so that they won’t be relevant to the Christmas shopping season.” https://www.cnbc.com/2019/08/13/trump-says-he-delayed-tariffs-because-of-concerns-over-christmas-shopping-season.html

1. Makes good sense
reduce the impact by giving more time before the following shopping season for businesses and consumers to plan and adjust.

3. I see both sides on this one
China will be shipping a lot of products to the US in the next 90 days and the tariff increase could hurt them but it would impact consumers in the US as well.
I guess we'll see what happens. |

2. In my opinion that was a smart move.
The liberal news media will of course disagree. They will insist Putin ordered Trump to delay tariffs.

7. it is ok because most of that is going to big agribusiness
it would be socialist if a family farm got a break.

14. If they agree with the tariffs they should not be taking the farmer welfare
to make up for lost markets.
Nobody is subsidizing my business to pay the import tax and nobody bailed out all the companies that went under as a result of lost markets due to Asian competition moving in and making it impossible for them to compete. |

15. No tariffs at all are the way to go.
But, if a country wants to impose tariffs on the US, we should at least match them.
I could be wrong, not being an economist. |

13. What is wrong with applying tariffs to Chinese goods
that match the tariffs that China imposes on American goods?
Trump would prefer that other countries drop ALL tariffs, so we could drop ALL of ours. Sounds reasonable to me. |

and not the American consumer? So why the need to postpone?

18. The CBO esimates
that working illegal immigrants pay around $7 billion a year in taxes. That's got to be what he had in mind. No sane person actually thought Mexico would ante up.
