New impeachment poll

“Half of voters support impeaching and removing Trump”

A new POLITICO/Morning Consult poll is the latest survey to show public backing for Congress' intensifying impeachment inquiry.

Half of voters support the impeachment and removal of President Donald Trump, according to a new POLITICO/Morning Consult poll.

The poll, conducted Monday and Tuesday, shows that 50 percent of registered voters surveyed would support the Senate’s removing Trump from office, while 43 percent oppose the president’s removal. Seven percent of voters were undecided.

The 50 percent who support Trump’s removal is identical to the percentage who approve of the intensifying impeachment inquiry into the president, and who would support the House’s voting to impeach Trump. Similarly, 44 percent of voters oppose the inquiry, and 43 percent would oppose the House’s impeaching the president.

The new poll is the latest public survey to show plurality or majority support for House Democrats’ impeachment inquiry, which began in earnest last month amid evidence that Trump used his power as president to press foreign governments to investigate his political rivals. But other polls show Americans are more divided on whether Trump should be removed from office.

In the POLITICO/Morning Consult poll, respondents were asked a series of three questions: whether they support the impeachment inquiry, whether they would support the House’s impeaching Trump and then whether they would support the Senate’s voting to remove him.

At each step, voters were split sharply along partisan lines. On the inquiry, 84 percent of Democrats, 16 percent of Republicans and 45 percent of independents support it — while 12 percent of Democrats, 81 percent of Republicans and 43 percent of independents oppose it.

3. This is a different poll

And in 2016 in November in the ABC News/Washington Post Tracking poll: “It’s 49 percent for Clinton and 46 percent for Trump race in a hypothetical two-way race, when Johnson and Stein supporters are asked to choose between the Republican and Democratic nominees. This reflects that Republicans and GOP-leaning independents show slightly more support for third-party candidates in general than do Democrats, 8 percent versus 5 percent, and for Johnson in particular, 5 percent versus 2 percent.
The latest estimate is based on interviews with 2,220 likely voters Nov. 3 to 6, with an error margin of plus or minus 2.5 percentage points. Other results aren’t materially different from those in our full report this morning.

The actual election outcome was Clinton: 48.2% and Trump: 46.1%. So the poll nailed Trump’s vote exactly and missed Clinton’s total by 8/10ths of a point.
