Don't Like a Candidate? Call His Dying Mother to Complain

PORTAGE, MI — A local Democratic state House candidate is crying foul after the Michigan GOP sent out campaign mailers this week directing Republicans to call him at a number for his 91-year-old mother's room at a Portage-based nursing home.

The mailers, which were paid for by the Michigan Republican Party, urge voters to call John Fisher, a candidate for the 61st state House District, and "Tell him hard-working Michiganders are being hurt by Obamacare and the health care policies (Democrats) support."

Fisher's mother is 91 years old and in hospice, dying from heart failure. The number on the flyer sent out by the Michigan Republican Party lists the number of the phone in her room for people to call and complain. Couldn't the MI Repubs be bothered to verify the phone number before advertising it and encouraging people to call it?

1. That's absolutely appalling.

The MI Republican party is asking people to harass an elderly woman in a nursing home. And surprise, the party has had no one available to comment on the story.

Wow.

2. Sounds like an underhanded tactic.

But i guess republicans are that desperate that any means justifies the end.
I'm amazed people actually vote for what calls itself todays Republican party.
With their incompetence lack of leadership no solution to any of todays problems their constant whining and bellyaching i'd be embarrassed to call myself a Republican these days.

3. The number is a Fisher listed number....

Even your link states...."The number is registered under Fisher's name, but is a direct line to his mother's room at Tendercare Portage, ..."
I can do a search for candidates here and get several numbers......I'd have no way to distinguish the many places it may be associated with.

Iden says....""Obviously, as you know, it was not sent out by our campaign,"...easily verified or discredited.

Absolutely it was a cheesy mailer... if they knew it was a Hospice...and I don't know how you would with a private name attached to a direct line...no where does the article say it was a switchboard with ext. deal.

6. Really?

They couldn't verify the number first? There are between 77,000 and 91,000 residents in each MI house district and there very well can be more than one person with that name. You think with a common name like "John Fisher," somebody would have done something to make sure that they didn't publish a wrong phone number?

This is the same party that got a blogger overexcited enough to photograph the wife of an opposition candidate under medical care. What makes you think that they would stop with harassing a candidate's dying mother?

10. City Litter...

1...the number listed was the candidates.....Per YOUR link.
2..."This is the same party that got a blogger overexcited enough to photograph the wife of an opposition candidate under medical care"
Why do you do this with me Cat Litter??? Makes no sense.
It was an IDIOT.... He was trying to take out Thad Cochran..a member of the SAME party..NOT an opposition candidate .."under medical care"...it was Thad's wife during a primary and it was a horrible thing.
Absolutely it's a vague difference...wife, oppositional candidate....it was one side eating their own.
The freak was Clayton Thomas Kelly...

Do you have a different example I've missed or confused....?
I'll address it.

11. Really Mature to Make Fun of Another Poster's Name

Your own name is too vulnerable for you to be doing that.

My example of a similar situation was good enough for you to know what I was talking about. The point was the exploitation of sick people associated with a candidate running against someone who is unscrupulous. There's nothing so difficult about that so your confusion is your own.

19. It Wasn't Me

I prefer to correct a person who's acting up. I've never alerted on a post on this or any other board.

It made me laugh that somebody did, though. Thanks, whoever it was!

7. Well the amateur Republican strategists should've verified where the number went to...

14. They've published his number before. Why this one this time?

Because they're fucking dirtbags, that's why. They have his personal number and chose to publish his elderly mother's instead.

Fortunately for the GOPers, since a lot of them are lacking empathy, they won't feel bad about this for long...if at all.
