2. Far rightwing terrorist who blew up Big Ben, most certainly not a hero

and he wore a frightful mask, one of the scariest I ever saw.
America doesn't like masks. They have a very bad history here in the USA

Shivers.

8. Wrong on so many level.

In 1605 England there was no RW

Americans will spend over $7 billion this year on masks and costumes for Halloween.

Guy didn't wear a mask of himself.

And he was fighting to stop Christian persecution by Knig James I

15. Guy Fawkes was 'fighting' to install a Roman Catholic theocracy

by blowing up dozens of people. Most of the English population would have opposed such a theocracy - they much preferred Elizabeth to Mary before this, and they had more and more suspicions about the Catholic leanings of James' son and grandsons after him, leading to a bloodless coup in which James II realised he had no support, and fled.

20. A terrorist

He wanted to kill the king and all his close advisers, kidnap his 9 year old daughter and force her to become a Roman Catholic, and install her as a puppet queen with his friends controlling the country and her under the rules of his own sect.

22. No, I cannot see a parallel with the situation in Syria

For a start, 'our government' is not trying to assassinate Assad, which would need to be the basis for a modern day equivalent.

23. Yes our hands were not on Gaddafi 's throat when he took his last breath

We sure as hell were the only reason somebody else's got that close and personal. So yes we did essential assassinate a Leader of a sovereign nation/ sign his death warrant- semantics.

As for Syria, or any conflict for that matter, who decides who gets called a rebel, a freedom fighter, a terrorist, an insurgent,

Do you know what scares the west and the Arab states so much, although not perfect, all the shite controlled countries Iran, Syria and now Iraq are all Democracies. We can't control democracies so we must take them down.

See Ukraine coup.

Obama would call him a moderate rebel Islamist fundamentalist if he was in Syria.

7. It's "V for Vendetta", and the movie sucked.

It was so changed and watered down from the original story that the author (Alan Moore) had his name removed from the credits.

The graphic novel, however, is genius.

13. An assumption on my part, because...

I don't know anyone who has read the book who thinks that Wachowski's abortion-of-an-adaptation is any good, much less something that should be seen by everyone.

I guess you're the first.

(BTW, Ebert actually liked the movie.)

26. "What are you defending?"

I'm defending Alan Moore's vision of the story, which isn't a future history of England as a stand in for what happened in America after 9/11.

The Wachowskis, in addition to gutting the artistry of the story by omitting and changing Moore's words, (compare V's TV station speech in each version), they made the plot all about how - if just enough people put on cool masks and marched in the street - democracy could be restored.

Moore's point is more dark - it's not just the government that has failed, it is human society itself. V comes not to restore things to the way they were. He comes to destroy.

V is a murderous anarchist, not a freedom fighter for democracy. Again, compare the TV station speeches. Wachowskis' version = something is wrong with the government...Moore's version = something is wrong with YOU. Indeed, at the end of the speech in Moore's version, V gives his listeners two years to "make improvements" and if they don't, he says that they will be "fired" - eliminated.

While I don't necessarily agree with Moore's V, he does make a powerful case that burning the whole thing down is the only way to get rid of the rot of corruption that has been inherent in human political structures since, well, forever.

I believe Moore would point to Occupy Wall Street, a group that adopted the Guy Fawkes masks to the point that some of their rallies even looked a bit like the end of the movie, as proof that his V was right - no amount of marching, chanting, or sitting in is going to change things at this point.

24. the movie was pretty good, imho

hard to ever beat the printed source, btw... but the movie was well done, and lot's of folks will get a lot out of it, especially if they are unfamiliar with the source.

nothing will beat (i hope) watching it on the big screen during the chimp miss-adim though
