In any group, there will be conflict. THAT was the problem with DU.

It is human nature.

DU was (is) a group of Democrats and people with single issue mindsets need to find enemies to support their reasons for existing.

They must have opposition to make a proposition.

For example, DU could be comprised of ALL feminists and they would begin to fight, making enemies and Hitlers of each other. '

DU'ers have been gnawing on each other ever since Bush left. We NEED to be exposed to the real world where there actually are people who are our political adversaries.

The recent vomit-fest regarding "white privilege" was a perfect illustration of how people need to demonize and create enemies in order to stay relevant. It was fascistic in its style and perfectly illustrative of the "eat your own" behavior that is inevitable when you are on a small boat adrift in the ocean and become starved for food.

1. Rightwingers are the ones who demonize

and need enemies. The entire conservative ideology is built upon fear and fear of others.

3. Not just right wingers. It is human nature. You need an opposing force to push upon.

So if you have an issue to push, you need to create that opposing force if it doesn't exist.

DU was FULL of people creating enemies and demonizing each other.

It was rampant.

I speak in the past tense because DU is -if not dead to me - on life support.

2. DU's problem was that they purged the wrong people from the site.

When the first DLC invasion came in the fall of 2003, it was a mild temporary annoyance.

The Obama vs Hillary primary wars were ugly, but it was after the election when Obama appointed a decidedly NON-Democratic cabinet and then sold us out on the public option that won him the primary in the first place. That's when I couldn't take it anymore, and when I made sure the BOGscum knew exactly where I stood.

Which of course, put a big red target on my back.

So, if I wanted to stay on this site, I would watch terms like the one used in the last line of the second paragraph of your post.

7. Can't say I really disagree

I can make 20 posts on good topics I see trending elsewhere I post but die with the quickness on DU. Post something about privilege, how people ignore sexism, an ad or magazine cover, and suddenly you get a lot of replies. I said it elsewhere, some people use gd for meta because they miss it. DU is now more about DU than issues.

8. The annoying thing at DU, especially in GD

it that it's either all "white privilege" or all "rape culture". All. The. Time.

I prefer to discuss issues that will actually solve issues, not one side blaming and flinging poo at another.

34. not really

GD usually follows the M$M issue du jour. In this apparently slow news cycle though, the Tal Fortgang article IS the latest issue du jour. There were plenty of posts on the Ukraine that I mostly didn't read, and then there was a long, long spell after New Haven when it was guns, guns, guns, guns, without even a break for roses. And then there was the Zimmerman trial.

10. Yes, I realize that.

Do you realize that the discussion of it is 1) out of proportion and 2) Being used in a bullying way?

Caution: This is a test of your honesty. Good luck.

32. I guess you can't just ignore stuff you don't like? You've got to take it personally,

let it get to you, and demand that "Bogscum" see things your way?

You're going to have a rough life. That's not the way things work -- here, on DU, or in the real world.

Looks like you've already learned that lesson on this very thread.

Disagree without being disagreeable...and if you don't like people, or ideas touted in threads, it's really not all that hard to just avoid them.

Adopting that kind of attitude would be a test of your judgment....good luck!

14. I think sometimes DU is the Democrats own worst enemy

I actually campaigned for Dems until I joined DU and was torn apart and thrown out for daring voice an opinion and original thought of my own I will never again campaign for a democratic candidate after the way I was treated by the party on DU.

The middle suits me just fine

24. If the way people treated you online changed your real life work,

it's you with issues and you were never really dedicated to the party or a cause.

26. Yet another reason I'm no longer a Dem

It wasn't my work. I was a volunteer. I gave my time freely for the cause and then I was called names and taunted by the DUrs. I get the idea that isnt such a shock or surprise to someone like you who would tell me if I didn't just suck it up and take it, I wasn't dedicated enough anyway.

You're bragging about being a penis shrinker? You're a real ray of sunshine aren't you?

29. I think this response just help illustrate the point

And yes, the way you are treated online, especially by supposed allies, can have an impact on choices you make in the real world.

Thats why marketers spend so much money online, and they would never think of alienating potential supporters, like some do in political forums, who allegedly pledge allegiance to the same cause.

That's the lamest thing I've ever seen practiced online

19. Thanks, Mr. Happy! I am happy to be here. It is more like DU2.

Those groups and forums fucked things up. Splintering what was already splintered and fractured.

Now, if fringers and one issue people want to post, they can hide behind their tags, but it will be scant protection from the eyes of others. And they can't boot people.

25. Having thought police will ruin any political site, imho

and is really anti-American.

I am all in favor of having passionate, yet civil debate and discussion, but when honest POVs can be terminated by a increasingly narrow interpretation of the rules, it is sowing the seeds of it's own destruction.

I was long an advocate for allowing the group to rank and categorize individual posts, and then allowing members to set a filter threshold to say hide all posts ranked under 3, or whatever, that way there was no censorship, and users could see as much, or as little as they wanted... kinda like slashdot.org does it.

otherwise it will eventually descend to an a narrow echo chamber that stagnants and doesn't benefit anyone.

3 cheers for the new forum!
