Make George Lincoln Rockwell's birthday a national holiday? Lobby Congress for a Joseph Raymond McCarthy memorial on the National Mall? Repeal the Civil War Amendments? Pay Georgia reparations for Sherman's March? Require every able-bodied American to own an automatic rifle? Privatize Yellowstone? Follow the recent lead of our brilliant Justice Thomas and encourage states to establish churches?

I'm afraid I may be a wee bit out of date on what's up

If it doesn't interfer with business or delay proceedings excessively, I don't care. We live in a society that general believes in a higher power. It costs nothing to stand/sit quietly and let them finish. This is all dependent on allowing ALL access to prayers. Let someone thank Krishna or the Monkey God in turn with whichever Christian denomination is in vogue. If they don't allow equal access to the mic, then I say bar it.

Let Christians have their own groups to pray and meet in, same for Muslims, same for Hindus, etc.
Then, everybody could be in their own group, praying to their own god, addressing their own concerns. Nobody would have to listen to another person's prayer. There's no reason why it couldn't be done before work.

I think much of his administration has been a disaster. He simply didn't have the executive skillset needed. That he squandered the neigh unassailable position of controlling all branches of government is flat out embarassing. His drone expansion and use of JSOC kill teams does salvage some respect tho.

Stop any gun control measures based on cosmetics-agree

Flat tax, national sales tax, corporate taxes to replace income tax-have to see the whole thing first

Promote true freedom of and from religion-agree

Fund infrastructure repair, improvement, and upgrades-agree

600 ship fleet, cancel the F35, save the A10, and start a real dedicated improvement program for the Infantry- Agree on F-35 and A-10. Have to see the rational and proposals for the rest.

19. I am pro-empire

The book "In Praise of Empires" by Deepak Lal has had a serious impact on my political development. I believe an American empire is the best hope for the world. Empires promote peace within their borders, secure trade, and maintain civilization. The anarchy we are seeing on the world stage is, I believe, a result of the decline of American military power and hard diplomacy. A strong, interventionist America is preferable to chaos and war. A well run empire does not let an exploitable workforce or potential customer state to starve. A well run empire promotes an international legal framework with an enforcement mechanism. Well run empires maintain the framework of civilization and let the Mob live their lives with a minimum of interference.

Empires fall, dude. Everyone living under them hates them, just as our Founding Fathers hated living under the British Empire. Americans used to recoil from the idea of empire. It was discussed in admirable terms under W. Bush, but that was a decided break from how the US previous saw it's role abroad. Not that it didn't behave like an empire before Bush, but it didn't like to see itself as such.

70 empires. During imperial times there is generally peace and prosperity. When empires fall, anarchy and bloodshed. Maintaining stability now is far more important than any other concern. A period of multi-great powers will, I fear, increase greatly the risks of nuclear wars.

58. A fair view, but I think it discounts our long history, especially since wwII, of our strong

interventionist policies.

In fact, since our arguably greatest threat since wwII had collapsed, the USSR, did we retire or downsize our MIC, and start spending our promised 'peace dividend' at home? Hell, no... we simply ratcheted up our military spending, and interventions abroad. Not that it has done us much good in the long run.

The biggest farce of all is that our MIC now has us even more afraid of guys running around barefoot in the dessert, than we were of the USSR, and are now spending even more than ever. What a joke.

What we are witnessing now is that even with our far greater expenditures in military, intervention, and clandestine operations, at home and abroad, we are still losing ground, and countries are beginning to form alliances against us.

Calling our long time allies, 'old Europe' when they didn't march lock-step with us into the abyss was a huge sign of how much credibility, and moral authority we had lost on the world stage due to our arrogant, imperial ways, since the fall of the USSR.

You see, we used to be a very well run empire... since JFK, not so much.

I recommend checking out "The Untold History of the United States" to see a bit more of the history that isn't presented on the evening news...
http://www.amazon.com/Untold-History-United-States/dp/1480507024

While you may think that you are thinking 'outside-the-box' you're views are very pedestrian in the US.

Welcome to DU

60. Empires all have one thing in common

Crumbling. The results are never good, for the center of the empire nor for the people so ruled. An empire is the imposition of a foreign will on a native populace, for the sole purpose of extracting wealth by force.

What you want is a federation; a nation that leads by example and welcomes others who wish to be led. Which has a lot less success in commandeering vast swaths of territory, but generally works pretty well to keep people on the same page and mitigates most of the awful impact of empire.

It would be nice if we can make this into a place for intelligent and open exchange of ideas. Far left here - but I'm also a pragmatist in the sense of not letting the perfect be the enemy of the good. So we need to find some practical middle ground - duking it out in a way that just sends the country swinging from one side to the other when the hands on the reins of power change is not a long term stable solution. And we're not going to dig down and figure out what we can agree on if we don't actually talk to each other.

I'm old enough to remember when people were able to do that in a relatively civil manner, without retreating to polarized positions the way it is now with the internet and the modern information age where you can immediately turn off anything you don't agree with or don't want to hear.

I will say, though, that some of the "other sites", including ones that have forums devoted to DU and similar sites, are often just as much echo chambers and "mush" as you claim DU to be.

69. Libertarianism

Has both a right wing and left wing. The right wing is newer and better know and is represented by groups like the Cato organization and libertarian party. Left wing is older and represented by organizations like the ACLU.

Generally, outside the US, libertarian usually causes people to think of its more leftwing incarnation:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Left-libertarianism

Libertarian socialism is a subset of left wing libertarianism.

43. Okay, minimum wage good?

I think a national standard for a minimum wage would be counter productive. Local conditions vary fairly widely, so picking any wage floor will be overly generous for some and substandard for others. Local control is paramount.

Now, as for the philosophical question if there should be a minimum wage, all I can say is it has to be balanced against the cost of doing business. How many cashiers do you see at the store these days versus the number of self checkout lanes? As a business owner, I would have to consider the cost benefit results of replacing more employees with automation. As an employee, I would be at risk of losing my job if my cost exceeds my return. That right there is the bottom line: does the employee provide more value than the cost of wages and benefits? You really have no Right to have a job, especially one that is a net negative on the business.

Having said that, there is a role for government to ensure workers are not exploited. This is an area I think unions have a.legitimate role in. It is a very comlex solution to a simple problem-how do you keep citizens from starving? I don't know if I have the anwser.

Investors will seek continually to maximize their profits, even by raising rates for goods, shrinkage, etc.

This is called good by many.

A worker who does the actual labor requesting more is seen as greedy and suddenly people worry about prices going up. It is not too much to ask, imho, that a person who works 40 hours a week should be able to have a roof over their heads and basic needs. Businesses won't ensure that because investors will want any extra they can get.

It is a simple moral proposition: You are free to start a business providing you pay the people doing the labor for you a fair rate. We could do like other countries and have a graduated min wage, lower for teens but when you hit twenty it increases.

If you know and understand before you start a business that this is the way it is and you choose to start a business then you are part of that social contract. You owe people a minimum for their labor and no more. Once you have a base to work from then you get into competing for better wages.

Tax the wages and give some form of 'welfare' to smaller companies - low interest loans, guaranteed lines of credit for growth, etc. If we had a national/state bank (which could do transactions at post offices like in some other countries) we would better be able to assist without the overhead.

Maybe not all the best of ideas to some, but a staging point for discussion.

35. What a civil greeting.

I hate to say I'm surprised, but...well, are you sure you didn't mean to type far left?

If you really are far Right, and usually this measured with your words, I look forward to politely disagreeing with 90% of what you write.

It will be interesting to have a mature discussion full of factual information to support points of view.

71. There are times when "fiscally conservative" is appropriate...

when paired with "socially liberal" in "I am fiscally conservative but socially liberal." A lot of fiscal conservatives don't support spending money on senseless wars while they do support governors doing what they can to keep big business in their states. "Fiscally conservative" is not only a tag for warmongering.

clowns to the left of me and jokers to the right.

But I do clearly identify more with the clowns. There ought to be clowns.

75. Simple

I find both extremes, left and right, to be hypocrites. I can cite the long list of specific policies and beliefs, but that could become long, drawn out, and boring for all. Simply put- I can find good and bad ideas in both Democrat and Republican ideals. Agreeing with some, disagreeing with others.
